The Indic MediaWiki Developers User Group organized the Indic MediaWiki Hackathon 2023 in Chennai, India. The goal of the hackathon was to bridge gap between technical contributors and content contributors in Indic communities. The hackathon took place in Chennai on 16 & 17 December 2023. The hackathon was broadly divided into two parts, introduction to technical spaces and project hackathon. The following sessions took place:

  • Introduction to Wikimedia technical spaces
  • MediaWiki APIs
  • Toolforge & VPS
  • Data across Wikimedia projects
  • Accessibility Wikimedia technical spaces
  • WMF Movement Comms and Partnerships
  • CIS-A2K Needs Assessment

On Day 1, project groups were formed after the initial introduction, which continued hacking on various technical projects on the both. A list of specific topics will be provided in the later sections. We also had participants from Viluppuram GNU/Linux Users Group (VGLUG) (https://vglug.org/) a open-source group based in Tamilnadu, which has formed base for future partnerships.

Part 2: Learning edit

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: We intend to learn the following things from this activity

  • organizing hackathons with a mix of existing developers and new developers interested to learn
  • a buddy system during the hackathons
  • working with potential FOSS groups

Over the last few hackathons, we realized that it is hard to design and well execute a program with both newcomers and existing newcomers, and also retention strategies with follow-up activities. We adopted this format in the annual plan for 2024 where the activities are planned separately for newcomers, with follow-up hackathons to connect with the rest of the community.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

A few days before the event, Chennai was hit by heavy cyclone, we had to closely monitor the news and be in contact with the situation on ground to assess whether it would be possible to organize the event as planned or to cancel. Eventually, after understanding information from various sources, we decided to proceed with the event as planned.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

We plan to use and share our learnings through activities planned as part of the annual plan for 2024.

Yes

9.1. Please state what difficulties you had. How do you hope to overcome these challenges in the future? Do you have any recommendations for the Foundation to support you in addressing these challenges? (required)
