1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

After a successful maiden event (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Programs/Wikimedia_Community_Fund/Rapid_Fund/Introducing_Wikipedia_to_Fante_Wikimedia_Community_(ID:_21884534) carried out to introduce and recruit new editors to edit on the Fante Incubator and Wikimedia projects, the project saw the recruitment of over 50 new editors and over 40 active community members who contributed to the creation of over 290 articles in the Incubator and other improvements on Wikidata.

As a new community growing rapidly with motivated groups (Fante Wikimedians) in 3 different cities (Takoradi, Cape Coast and on two University Campuses in Winneba), this project seeks to improve the retention rate, continuous engagement of new and experienced editors to edit Wikimedia projects and also train selected volunteers on leadership skills to take up leadership roles in future in the community. (https://citinewsroom.com/2022/10/fante-wikipedia-community-ready-to-digitize-language-article/)

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

This project aims at building the capacity of the community members, improve the retention rate and continuous engagement of new and experienced editors to edit Wikimedia projects and also train selected volunteers on leadership skills to take up leadership roles in future and expand the Wikimedia community engagement in Ghana for a duration of four months.

Our maiden event saw participants motivated and eager to contribute to Wikimedia projects, especially to their local wiki, the Fante Wikipedia Incubator. This approach was chosen to increase the momentum and recruit new editors by encouraging more Fante speakers to translate or contribute to Wikimedia projects.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

This four-month project seeks to expand Wikimedia community engagement in Ghana and Fante Wikimedians Community. Given that, we plan to organize six (6) in-person events for the four groups in 3 different cities (Takoradi, Cape Coast and two University Campuses in Winneba) since it’s a cultural group with diverse and comprehensive settlements. The in-person training workshop is to be organized two times for each group.

Four (4) Online events will be organized where time will be spent discussing ongoing projects, future developments, and support for volunteers, Office hours etc

A two-day training dubbed “Train the Trainers” designed to groom selected volunteers with leadership skills, Wikimedia projects refreshing training, and build soft skill sets so they can effortlessly train others. These strategies are adopted because, as a new community growing rapidly, we seek to Improve the retention rate and continuous engagement of new and experienced editors to edit Wikimedia projects and train selected volunteers on leadership skills to take up leadership roles in future.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

The contents of the programme will prioritize bridging the information gap and language barrier by documenting them on English and Fante Wikipedia. The target participants are existing members from the Fante Wikimedia Community, the Fante people (natives) and anyone who can contribute in Fante and also engage.

We will continue communicating through our existing Whatsapp, telegram, and social media platforms. We wish to apply the strategies below to retain participants after your proposal is implemented:

Collecting usernames and contact information via feedback forms Adding people to (optional!) mailing lists or social media groups identifying the most prolific, knowledgeable, and motivated contributors and inviting them to future events. New participants will be added to the existing WhatsApp/Telegram group to continue discussions

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

We will make sure to follow Wikimedia friendly space policy. By making sure we assume good to others regarding contributions and opinions.
