現在日本が抱える社会課題のひとつに地方都市における少子高齢化や大都市への人口流出による過疎化が挙げられる。この課題は地方経済を縮小させ、仕事や余暇の選択肢を住民から奪っている。それがさらなる過疎化へと繋がり、課題は悪循環を繰り返している。他方、日本の地方都市には各地の地理的、気候的、あるいは歴史的背景により育まれた独自の文化が息づいている。しかしながら前述の過疎化によって、これらの貴重な文化を担う人材が不足していることが日本文化の継続可能性という観点において大きな課題であると言える。この課題は日本政府としても文化庁や観光庁を中心として活発に議論され様々な戦略が練られている。例えば、観光庁では「観光立国推進基本計画」として「持続可能な観光地域づくり戦略」「インバウンド回復戦略」「国内交流拡大戦略」という3つの戦略を掲げている。そこで私たちは「日本の地方都市の魅力を最大化する」というヴィジョンを掲げ、各地方に伝わる特有の文化と、それらを育んだ地理的・気候的・歴史的な文脈にフォーカスし、Wikimediaプロジェクトを最大限に活用することでこの状況に変化をもたらそうと考えている。地方文化はそれぞれの地方都市自体や、そこに住む人々のアイデンティティの根幹であり現在の日本の状況において特に重要であると考える。私たちは前述の課題を解決するためのアプローチとして、日本の地方都市でその都市の持つ魅力的な歴史遺産・文化遺産をテーマとしたエディタソンを開催することを計画している。この計画の狙いは3つある。1つ目は、住民自らが地元の歴史や文化を語れるようにすることで、地元の内側からの循環を図ることである。2つ目は、他の文化やコミュニティに属する人々に対して発信を行い、理解と共感を得ることで、地元の外側からの循環を図ることである。3つ目は、若い世代が地元に戻る動機を作り、都市部などで身につけたスキルを地元に活かすという、時系列上の循環を図ることである。

開催地の市民、周辺市町村の市民、歴史や文化に関心のある日本国内在住者が対象となる参加者である。これらの人々は教育関係者、GLAM関係者、学生が中心になると考えられるが、これらに限らず、あらゆるコミュニティに属する好奇心旺盛で活動的な人々を受け入れる。これらの人々の関心を惹きつけるために、魅力的なデザインのイベントフライヤーを制作し、エディタソンに参加することで参加者自身や地域社会にとってどのような肯定的な変化が生じるかを伝える。また活動の間は、参加者各自の興味関心を尊重し、運営者は技術的な支援と機会の提供に注力する。エディタソンの最後には各自がどのような取り組みを行ったかを他の参加者に発表する機会を設ける。また、エディタソン終了後は開催レポートを参加者に届ける。これらを通して興味関心の継続を図る。
