Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

One editathon and series of training were held to build on the skills of already existing editors and introduce Wikimedia projects to newly recruited editors. Participants marveled at the amount of knowledge that was learned.

Participants were trained on how to contribute to Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons since this project involved activities that had to do with creating/improving Wikidata items and uploading photos on Wikimedia Commons.

Participants were dispatched to the various institutions to capture photos of these institutions, a photo upload session was instituted to upload the photos to Wikimedia Commons.

We had a session where participants were made to practice the knowledge learned on Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons, this was done for a period and the list of items was shared among them to create/improve their Wikidata items. Photos had already been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons during the upload session, the participants capitalized on that and were guided to add photos of the institutions to their various Wikidata items.

It was an awesome observation as experienced Wikimedians were made to guide the newbies to carry out the activity. As a facilitator and organizer, I would always encourage the use of strategies that puts participants at the center of activities, that is, the participant-centered approach.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Workshops/Training: This approach or strategy is used to gain new knowledge and also rekindle what they already know, that is, they refresh their minds on what they already learned. This approach gave participants the opportunity to learn more about Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons They effectively shared ideas among themselves and in this way, participants did not only gain new knowledge but also socialized and got to know more about co-wikimedians.

Editathon: Editathons are usually the quickest approach to use if one wants to complete a task early. It is very participatory and engages participants more. Participants were enthused to work more as they saw their co-participants doing the same. Again, this approach allowed participants to share ideas through the think-pair-share technique.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Strongly agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Strongly agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Strongly agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

N/A

Part 2: Your main learning edit

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

The project contributed heavily to Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons as all the set targets for these two Wikimedia projects have been surpassed.

Participants used two approaches in uploading the photos to Wikimedia Commons, that is, copying the links to the photos and pasting them on their corresponding Wikidata items.

Some of them also searched directly for the photos on the Wikidata items in the image field for the respective photos. As indicated in the previous section, experienced Wikimedians were assigned to newbies and they enthusiastically supported them in rectifying their challenges.

All in all the project has contributed massively to Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons as Wikimedia projects and consequently contributed to open knowledge.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

We experienced serious internet connectivity fluctuations which hindered the swiftness of the event.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

I intend to make future events more participants centered and will play more of a facilitator role.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).

Part 3: Metrics edit

10a. Open Metrics reporting

In your application, you defined some open metrics and targets (goals). You will see a table like the one below with your metric in the title and the target you set in your proposal automatically filled in. Use the tables to report the result. Use the comments column to describe any aspects of this result that you find relevant. If the results were different from the initial target (goals) then you can explain why and what you learned from this. You can also provide any qualitative analysis regarding these results. In the last column please describe the tools and methodology used to collect this data and any difficulties you might have had.

Open Metrics Summary
Open Metrics Description Target Results Comments Methodology
Number of events Total number of events 4 4 We had a total number of 4 physical events. The events included sessions dedicated to Wikidata and others for Wikimedia Commons. Outreach dashboard
Number of participants Total number of participants that will take part in the project. We expect to have in attendance new recruits. 35 25 The project funds were not received at the expected time, and for that, there was a massive rise in the inflation rate in Ghana. Due to that, we had to reduce the number of participants by 5 to cater for other items and activities in the project. Additional 5 participants did not show up for the event due to personal reasons. Due to these reasons, we had to work with 25 participants. Outreach dashboard
Number of new editors recruited All participants in one way or the other have contributed to Wikimedia projects but we anticipate having new recruited in participation. 5 5 A total number of 5 participants were recruited and took part in the event. Outreach dashboard
Number of new recruits to create their user accounts. We anticipate having new recruits attending the event hence user accounts will be created for them. 5 5 We successfully created user accounts for 5 newbies who were recruited to participate in the event. Outreach dashboard
Number of photos used on Wikimedia projects This represents the number of photos from this project used on Wikimedia projects. 100 102 We surpassed the set target by 2 photos Outreach dashboard

10b. Core Metrics reporting

In your application, you defined targets for some core metrics and targets (goals). You will see a table like the one below with each core metric in the title and the target you set in your proposal automatically filled in. Note: a table will appear for each Wikimedia project content contribution you defined in your proposal.
