1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

We want to increase multimedia and interactive content within the Wikimedia movement. This is required for us to remain relevant. Google, for example, has made it clear that content which contains higher amounts of multimedia and interactive material will be placed more prominently.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

We are working to achieve this in various ways:

1) The VideoWiki effort is working to introduce collaboratively editable and multilingual video to the movement. It can create a video from a mediawiki based script.

2) The Our World in Data Mirror efforts bring interactive graphs to the mediawiki environment. Work is still required to keep these up to date and make them multilingual plus address any security issues present before they can be moved to a Wikipedia production evironment.

3) The multiimage viewer is an effort to allow CT and MRI scans to be viewable within a mediawiki environment.

4) Further develop our translation dashboard.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

The plan is to hire developers to further develop the above projects.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.
5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

Once funding is secured we will need to work on hiring people to fulfil the programing positions. The high level guidance of the project will be carried out by volunteers.

6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Language, Topics considered to be of impact or important in the specific context

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

In many languages health care content is lacking. We will work to address this through translation with partners such as ProZ.com

VideoWiki, by introducing summary videos of topics help meet the needs of those with lower literacy.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Education, Open Technology

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Linguistic / Language, Digital Access

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

For the VideoWiki and OWIDM efforts, we will be working to engage the current communities working in those languages. For example we have consensus from the Basque community to introduce the OWIDM. Efforts are ongoing to bring the extension through code review. https://mdwiki.org/wiki/WikiProjectMed:OWID

VideoWiki has at some point in time worked in about 17 languages of Wikipedia.

We are recruiting translators from the volunteer translator community.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

Wiki Project Med Foundation and MDWiki have a code of conduct

11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.

Consensus for OWIDM on Basque Wikipedia is here https://eu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topic:Wr0cgff9sat6mv3k

Discussion of NC Commons dates back to at least 2014 https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/NonFreeWiki and we created it in 2021 https://nccommons.org/wiki/Main_Page

An overview of VIdeoWiki was present at Wikimania in Sweden in 2019 https://mdwiki.org/wiki/WikiProjectMed:VideoWiki#Why?

12. Are you aware of other Rapid Fund proposals in your local group, community, or region that are being submitted and that align with your proposed project?

No

If yes:

12.1 Did you explore the possibility of doing a joint proposal with other leaders in your group?
N/A
12.2 How will this joint proposal allow you to have better results?
N/A
13. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedia partners to implement this proposal? Required.

Yes

13.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.

We are working with Our World in Data. They are an NGO based out of Oxford England and release all their material under an open license including their code. They bring the technical data visualization expertise, we bring the language expertise. We benefit by being able to incorporate their material into our content, while they benefit from improved multilingual content.

We are working with ProZ.com. They are working to launch a volunteer humanitarian effort as leaders in the translation industry. We bring high quality and high impact content in need of being translated as well as the technical infrastructure that makes translation easy.

14. In what ways do you think your proposal most contributes to the Movement Strategy 2030 recommendations. Select a maximum of THREE options that most apply.

Increase the Sustainability of Our Movement, Improve User Experience, Innovate in Free Knowledge, Evaluate, Iterate, and Adapt

Learning, Sharing, and Evaluation edit

15. What do you hope to learn from your work in this fund proposal?

We hope to learn about effective methods of bringing on volunteer translators who are currently outside our movement.

We hope to learn about the steps required to launch the OWIDM in a language version of Wikipedia.

We hope to learn about what is required to get the adoption of NC Commons by a Wikimedia project.

16. Based on these learning questions, what is the information or data you need to collect to answer these questions? Please register this information (as metric description) in the following spaces provided.

N/A N/A N/A
17.1 If for some reason your proposal will not measure these core metrics please provide an explanation.

We developed a dashboard as part of the relaunch of our translation efforts in 2021. The dashboard; however, is currently under counting the impact and we need to improve its reliability. https://mdwiki.toolforge.org/Translation_Dashboard/leaderboard.php

18. What tools would you use to measure each metric selected? Please refer to the guide for a list of tools. You can also write that you are not sure and need support.

With respect to the OWIDM, getting it functional in Basque is one metric we would be looking at. Adoption by subsequent languages would likely be easier. We realize that their are a number of fairly significant hurtles to overcome to achieve this.

With respect to VideoWiki, we have the number of languages in which the software is functional, plus we collect the number of video scripts that have been created in each language. Creating tools that automate the collection of this data will be required.
