Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

The proposed strategy was to celebrate Art+Feminism’s 10th Year Anniversary in Lagos, Nigeria by hosting and organizing two meet-ups for volunteer editors who are concerned with protecting the knowledge of notable women in the African music industry and their impact, documenting credible stories, correct misrepresentation and misinformation, and also explore conversations around innovating in free knowledge as it concerns Women and African Music, as well as advancing the objectives of Art+Feminism. Unfortunately, this project facilitated by Afrosounds Wikiproject was able to execute just a meet-up which featured a panel session and keynote discussions about Women in African music and the impacts being made by Art+Feminism, without the edit-a-thon session. We worked with a theme "Collective Action: Women, African Music and Open Knowledge” to engage in conversations at the intersection of Art+Femisim objectives of promoting free knowledge of women in Arts and related discuss, as well as that of Afrosounds which is concerned with the protection and preservation of knowledge as it concerns African music and sounds on open source. The meet-up was hosted to celebrate the impact of Art+Feminism over the years through these conversations and the need to accurately represent the stories of outstanding women and their impacts on the free encyclopedia and also discussed strategies that could be adopted to create further impact for women in musical arts in Africa.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

The primary aim of this project was to celebrate the impacts of Art+Feminism over the years through collective action of volunteer editors globally and also increase the capacity of new and old editors to gain insights and knowledge about contributing credible knowledge of women in African music. This was possible through facilitating a meet-up session to discuss women, African art, music and open knowledge with Afrosounds which has an existing community of volunteer editors advancing the free knowledge of African music and sounds. The meet-up featured an insightful keynote discuss which was delivered by a female senior music executive and the project lead at Afrosounds, as well as a panel session that had three female speakers; one being an open knowledge advocate from Lagos State University and two other music executives in Nigeria. A Question and Answer interactive session also followed to give insights and address questions participants had about concerns in contributing to free knowledge and addressing the gender biased knowledge deficit in African music. Conversations were also had to further advance the impact of Art+Feminism, and ultimately, Wikimedia projects in the community to contribute relevant topics to open source and the free encyclopedia.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Strongly agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

Building on an existing relationship with the Yoruba Wikimedians in Nigeria, we were able to have some editors who contribute and promote knowledge in Yoruba as an underrepresented and minority language. These participants joined the discussion on the possibilities of exploring open knowledge to contribute, document and preserve knowledge of indigenous sounds, musical topics and credible women stories of the Yoruba culture to the free encyclopedia and other wiki projects.

Part 2: Your main learning edit

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

The learning priorities included how much of Women in African Music content we must have contributed to free knowledge. Through the meet-up, we were able to build an interest and increase the capacity of over 30 participants to explore individual efforts through collective action to contribute available knowledge about women in African music and art to the general sum of knowledge available on wiki projects through an interactive and resourceful training session. Hence incorporating participants in the campaign of bridging gender biased knowledge about related discuss.

This project also explored conversations about how volunteer editors and project activities could facilitate attention, intervention and an extensive contribution of content concerning African women in art from credible media houses and publications to provide access to source contents for reference purposes while creating content, hence advancing the objectives of Art+Feminism.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

The unavoidable absence of the project lead to coordinate the second meet-up (edit-a-thon) due to a responsibility to work duty was a negative situation which altered some of the proposed learning outcomes of the project. Two supporting project team members who would have taken up the task were also called up to a compulsory school and community responsibility programme.

This fallout made the project lead learn the essence of developing and empowering the project team with strategic capacity to function in accordance to the project expectations without so much dependence on the project lead when need be. Alternatively, it was also observed that the project could have hosted an online edit contest to promote the contribution of content to wiki projects for a certain duration by participants. All of these issues would be looked into critically to avoid such experiences in further engagements.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Having discussed extensively on the need to contribute article content to Wikipedia on women and Arts in Africa, this project also observed the possibility of extending it’s objectives to promoting the contribution of content in various forms as well to other sister wiki projects as it concerns the project discuss, such as capturing indigenous sounds and moments for wiki commons and collaborating with women centered creative communities to further advance the objectives of free and open knowledge on impactful women and credible stories in African music and art through the lens of Art+Feminism.
