  • Amount spent: 43541 USD

Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your strategies and activities proposed were implemented and if any changes to what was proposed are worth highlighting?

Out strategies were implemented through community efforts. We realized what it truly meant to work together as a community and brought all hands on deck to achieve the proposed activities while also supporting members and giving them opportunities where it's required.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you feel are being effective in achieving your goals?

Yes! For example:
1. Working together
2. Supporting the community.
3. Making our goals and objectives clear
4. Learning and skills building opportunities
5. Internal micro grants

3. What challenges or obstacles have you encountered so far?

So far, we've only encountered challenges in the area of getting mentors for our Wiki Mentor Africa program.

4. Please describe how different communities are participating and being informed about your work.

We've informed communities about our works through our annual User Group report and also our activities page on Meta as well as the Education Wiki's Newsletter.

5. Please share reflections on how your efforts are helping to engage participants and/or build content, particularly for underrepresented groups.

People in and around our community have become more aware of the value of Wikimedia especially in preserving our language and culture and they've become more active in training and campaigns.

We achieved this by bringing the movement closer to them in the form of Fan Clubs at Universities and Hubs in different States in the South Eastern part of Nigeria. This is regarded as their catchment areas where they're able to come together and get involved.

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What have you learned so far about these areas during this period?

We have learnt that working together as a community is important but developing the skills and abilities of our community members while also empowering, listening, giving opportunities and supporting them helps achieve more

7. What are the next steps and opportunities you’ll be focusing on for the second half of your work?

We would focus more on community development. This past half of the year has taught us that when we improve the skillsets of our community members, we achieve more together as the give their best.

16. We’d love to hear any thoughts you have on how the experience of being a grantee has been so far.

The year 2022 started out on a very good note for the Igbo Wikimedians User Group. The first half the year went well with a lot of accomplishments. This was as a result of the Igbo Wikimedians User Group Simple Annual Grant 2022 which we appreciate the Foundation for. We've been able to explore and go all out without setbacks. This year, we were able to develop two unforeseen collaborations with: Black Lunch Table to host the Black History month. This led to the production of over 5000 articles which can be seen on the dashboard here. Another wonderful [Software Collaboration for Wikidata is with the Wikimedia Deutschland for our Wiki Mentor Africa program which involves a two year funding collaboration to develop the skills of young African developers. In the first to third edition, we've seen interests from an average of 55 developers from Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda etc. We have also been able to improve the User Interface of the Igbo Wikipedia and brought the Igbo Wikipedia to 8,299 articles. Our baby projects in the incubator namely: Igbo Wikiquote has gone from 30 quotes to 2,384 and Igbo Wiktionary from 1,500 to 2,180 with approval to leave the incubator. We have also been to improve the skillsets of our community members through learning webinars etc.
