Proposal edit

1. What is the overall vision of your organization and how does this proposal contribute to this? How does this proposal connect to past work and learning?

Our mission is to help groom the skills and talents of Ghanaian youth through volunteerism. By empowering them to lead and contribute to open source projects like Wikipedia, we provide a platform and opportunities for them to apply the knowledge they acquired from school. We also equip them with skills, knowledge, and experience that could be of so much benefit to them career-wise.

2. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important?

Our experience with our previous annual grant has demonstrated that a lapse in volunteer engagement leads to a low retention rate because volunteers take up other interests. We have also identified that the contribution of content has mostly been on Wikipedia and Wikidata. However, there is more to contribute to Ghana and there are more people to be reached out to. For this reason, we would also want to introduce our partners to Wikimedia Commons, in addition to Wikipedia and Wikidata.   In view of the above, we intend to keep our community members and partners engaged through edit-a-thons, contests, capacity-building workshops, and photowalks. We intend to maintain our relationship with our partners (Nubuke Foundation, Accra Archive, Ghana Library Authority (Effutu Municipality), Dallung Community Library, Jisonayili Community Library, and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research – Ghana, College of Languages Education, Ajumako) for the year 2023 by continuing with our activities. Hopefully, this will draw in other interested organizations, especially public institutions.

Based on the above, we would like to see the following changes.

Increase in community and partner engagement Increase in volunteers and partners Close the content gap. Improve the capacity of community members.

We believe achieving this will greatly impact on MS recommendations 1, 6, and 9, which are to Increase the Sustainability of Our Movement, Innovate in Free Knowledge, and Invest in Skills and Leadership Development.

3. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

We intend to forge new strategic partnerships that will help us provide capacity training workshops for our community members and acquire resources to help us improve content about the various regions, ethnic groups and their cultures in Ghana. For instance, we intend to partner with influencers like Wodemaya to help us improve content and run contests. Partner with shows like Ghana’s Most Beautiful, which talks about the rich cultural heritage of Ghanaians, to help us promote Wikipedia to a wider audience and also improve content about the different cultures and ethnic groups in Ghana. We intend to make use of the Let’s Connect initiative to help provide skills training to our community members. In our bid to improve open knowledge and access to open knowledge, we also intend to partner with the Ghana School of Law Library to document all supreme court cases since its inception in 1960 to date on Wikidata and also document landmark cases on Wikipedia. We believe that making information in this manner available to the general public will go a long way to improving the judicial system of the country. While we improve and increase content on the various sister projects of the Wikimedia Foundation, lawyers and judges will be able to easily and freely access information that could be used for research work. Specific Wikidata properties will be used for this project to ensure its sustainability. In the future, data scientists can be consulted to assess the potential of developing a software application with the data. With our CSIR Librarians, we intend to introduce them to wikidata tools such as Open Refine and Quick statements.  CSIR, as a research institution, has a huge database of bibliographic records that we will want to upload on Wikidata with the help of the librarians. Wikidata as a platform is leveraged by Google to create knowledge panels for searched items, and it is our belief that uploading bibliographic data of researchers from the institution will consequently enhance the visibility of the works of these researchers and the institution at large, while we increase content on Wikidata. In our next project with Nubuke, we will want to introduce them to Wikimedia Commons. In our bid to improve the visibility of Ghanaian art and Ghanaian artists to the world, we intend to partner with our Nubuke team to upload over 500 pictures of artworks by selected Ghanaian artists, and also pictures of cultural festivities that will be taken in the course of the year. These pictures will include exhibitions of indigenous art pieces from the indigenous Upper West Region of Ghana. Monthly Workshops with our partners and community members will refresh the skills of existing volunteers and train new volunteers. We will be organizing quarterly contests for our partners and community members. Our learning from our projects proved that contests are not only a great way to retain existing volunteers and also bring in new volunteers.

4. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
