We are working with new organizers in Turkey, Germany, Italy, and some countries in the CEE region. See more information on our page here. (Update these countries on the Wikivibrance collaborators’ page)
Also to be noticed, some of the existing or future campaigns, such as Wiki Loves Cosplay, do not qualify for any specific region, as everyone can be part of it regardless of their location
- 8. What are your programs, approaches, and strategies? What are the challenges that you are trying to address and how will your strategies support you in addressing these challenges? (required)
For the past 2 years, we have been interacting with young people in diverse communities in the movement through campaigns such as International Youth Day, Africa Youth Month, European Youth Day and Green Expressions. Through these campaigns, we have engaged about 1000 youth and people supporting their journey across 18 communities, creating 6,143 articles, improving 22,168 articles, 22,606 wikidata items and 3,661 wikimedia commons uploads.
We acknowledge there are over 1.8 billion young people in the world today. This also manifests in the Wikimedia movement but not in the same distribution in all the communities. There are more in some communities (e.g. Africa) and a few in others (e.g. Europe). Even so, the existing youth populace are restricted to activities peculiar with their communities with limited youth-focused programs that creates opportunity for young people in diverse regions in the movement to interact, connect, and raise action to contribute to open knowledge as a singular group. This makes it difficult to have visibility for the work of wikimedia youth in and outside the movement as well as build inspiration among young people. From our interactions with young people in the movement, they are eager to engage in global wikimedia activities that connect them with diverse youth in the movement across Africa, Asia, Europe and other communities to share experiences and gain support in activating local youth communities and participation. Wikimedia youth require motivation and inspiration from one another as well as support in growing the youth population and participation in diverse communities in the movement. We acknowledge the importance of young people in the sustainability of the movement. And in order to attract more young people in the movement, we need to create global youth engagement activities that raise the voice of wikimedia youth outside the movement to create visibility for their work. Beyond this, it presents an opportunity to build open knowledge for and by the youth.
According to our Theory of the Change, the movement is in a moment where the need of focusing on Young people is clear. It is a way of implementing the first recommendation of the Movement Strategy, and in our plan we aim to implement several initiatives related to several Strategy Initiatives.
In response to the movement’s challenges, we have developed the strategies listed in this link
