Main proposal

edit
1. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be a title for the Meta-Wiki page. (required)
LSP funding request 2024
2. Do you want to apply for the multi-year funding or renewal process? (required)
No but we would like to apply for renewal next time
2.1. For how many years of multi-year funding are you applying? (required)
3 years
2.2. Provide a brief overview of Year 2 and Year 3 of the proposed plan and how this relates to the current proposal and your strategic plan? (required)

We plan to continue our threefold strategic axes detailed in our 2023 grant and have detailed our 2024 strategic plan that we wish to pursue in year 2025 and 2026 as we are in a period of consolidation phase of our revenue streams and governance after initiating a professionalization process in 2021, first by paying a professional accounting agency and then by hiring an executive director. To maintain current level of implication it is probable we will need an administrator taking care of financial flows and keeping the documentation of the accounts in check as the amount of work exceeds what a volunteer treasurer can do. As we also engaged in recruiting more board members and need to structure activities and welcoming at this level in the next two years as this was a big jump from 2 to 3 board members to 7 & 8 and hired staff. The operational consolidation phase is not over as there is a constant steady increase in operational activities and we need to be able to sustain the effort without risking burnouts of volunteers and staff. Our wish is to favor projects stemming from our bases of contributors, rather than conducting big campaigns with low retention rate. We aim at a steady and constant training and mentoring underrepresented communities, so that they feel welcomed and cared for. We also need to tend to our network of trained wikipedian volunteers who are asking for activities focusing on their needs for development. Until recently, our group was very "newby" centered, but a a group of more trained wikimedians emerge we need to reflect on what motivates them and make them, stay. This is why we maintain a strong presence on our Wikipedia discussion page and in our Telgram group, and also have regular meetings each week online, both for new contributiors and an article evaluation team which looks at each single produced article by the project. The results of these activities is not solely captured by the dashboards, but also have an impact on the Wikipedian project [1] which is why we designed a metrics page that we will be upgrading and documenting [2] We plan to continue helping contributors from Africa and possibly francophone Carrabean regions to emerge as driving forces in our movement, following the example of what we achieved in Benin (2 female contributors were elected to our board) and ideally extend each year to two new African and Carabbean groups active mentoring of local volunteers to achieve their projects. This is why we plan to continue our Quinzaine des autrices francophone campaign throughout the 3 years as this is a good entry point to our projects for African countries [3]

We will continue to collaborate with GLAM and Universities as the opportunities emerge. 2024 will be the last year of our planned 5 year collaboration with University of Geneva, where we intervened giving Wikipedia courses at masters level in the gender studies department [4]. We hope to be able to initiate other fruitful interractions with universities in the future.

We have consolidated presence with national archives institutions and will be continuing with the feminist archive and library Marguerite Durand [5], as well as events planned with La Contemporaine [6] in Nanterre and la Sorbone [7]

We also plan to continue publishing one fanzine each year with a different thematic focus each year and distribute them largely in the movement. We also will be continuing both online and offline regular meetups (weekly ¬ monthly) and ensure documentation of all our activities is carried one.

During our strategy work in 2022, we insisted that we wished to remain flexible to opportunities as their emerge from volunteers, sometimes most unexpectedly. This is why it is difficult to identify all future opportunities in this section. Our previous experience with "local groups" proved that asking for funding of a particular group is risky if the volunteers of that group suddenly don't have time or energy to continue. 8. What are your programs, approaches, and strategies? What are the challenges that you are trying to address and how will your strategies support you in addressing these challenges? (required)

1- Strategy 1 Improving Inclusion and diversity in the francophone community.

We will continue to build a structured and welcoming environment to empower contributions from underrepresented communities and partner with NGOs that have the same objectives. This is important to achieve a better balance and equity in the diversity of our movement to foster better representation of knowledge that are currently not available on our projects. This includes training new contributors and helping them assess their needs and mentoring them to achieve their goals.

2- Improving coverage of Gender gap and under-represented contents

We will continue our efforts to reduce the gender gap at content level within the francophone community by maintaining and expanding our activities. We want to sustain our efforts to partner with GLAM and universities to reach out to potential contributors and offer editathons and trainings on topics of gender studies, women and LGBTIQ+ history, intersectionality and feminism. We also want to continue organizing more events to cover the african gender gap, an area which is most of the time forgotten. This work includes wikipedia but not only : we plan to continue organizing Wikidata, Wikisource trainings and continue our work with les sans images on Commons.

3- Improving sustainability with professionalization of the association

We want to be able to sustain our actions in the long run to tackle diversity & inclusion issues within the francophone Wikimedia movement and gender gap and underrepresented contents so that the sum of all knowledge is more diverse. We want to provide support to leaders of local groups and avoid burn out of volunteers in the long run to tackle all financial, managerial and coordination aspects, as well as provide adequate resources and guidelines to leave them free to contribute and facilitate. We also want to gather concerns from underrepresented communities and empower them to participate more in the leadership of the movement. We think these strategies have proved efficient in the past and that the continuing professionalization of the association will bring more sustainability and regularity to our projects to anchor them in the francophone community. Now we want to avoid volunteers to be burned out and provide professionalization for training, reporting, and general management of the association. We also want to share our nowledge and best practices, as well as our challenges with other similar groups tacking gender gap in other langages and continue to showcase our successes on social medias. To achieve this is time and human rssource consuming, but cross community support and knowledge sharing is fundamental.

4. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

1. Activity 1 Improving Inclusion & diversity To achieve this we will :

   Train new contributors
Train our pool of regular contributors to contribute to other projects than Wikipedia (Wikisource, Wikidata, Wiktionnary, Wikiquote, Commons)
   2. Activity 2 Improving coverage of Gender gap and under-represented contents

To achieve this we will:

Sustain our quantitative efforts to produce articles about women, feminism, LGBTIQ+ topics and BIPOC history in editathons and online & offline events

All metrics provided are optional, please fill them out if they are aligned with your programs and activities.

Participants, editors, and organizers
Metrics name Target Description
Number of all participants 660 Figures for 2022 are high due to participation in an editathon with 352 participants in Mallorca. If we take these 352 away, we are left with 308 participants.

In 2023 up to september we had 308 participants as per our dashboards. So we can evaluate that this figure of 300 participants will be maintained will be maintained.

Number of all editors 314 The figures are those of 2022 as 2023 has not been calculated yet. The figures are here https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Les_sans_pagEs/Metrics
  • Number of all editors: Existing and new editors involved in activities funded by the grant : based on editors having proactively fed recent articles to the project (this figure might be lower than the actual amount of editors but captures a proactive participation to the project that can be measured throughout the years).
  • new editors : 160 in 2022
  • retained editors : honnestly we are at the moment not capable of calculating this precisely. Approximatively 10 to 15 ?
Number of new editors 160
Number of retained editors 10

Additional information

edit
22. In this optional space you can add any other additional information about your proposal or organization that you think can help us when reviewing your proposal. (optional)

We are conscious there is a major increase in the amount we ask for, but this should not be happening again for the next 3 years as we wish to stabilize. In 2022 there was approx 20 000 dollars mistake in the amount presented for staff expenses. The salary for an ED compared to the current staffing prices in Switzerland is very low given the amount of responsibility and the risks involved in such a position (mainly a reputational risk). Then we did not count the office rental or the rental of the home for a dedicated space, nor did we include office furniture, which are provided pro bono by our employee. we had also taken away the line for staff travel and accommodation, when asked to retain the minimum ppossible to operate the projects, but without this funding our employee cannot travel to meet people where they need it and attend events that are important for les sans pagEs. We have also faced contingencies in that one of our main sponsors, Wikimedia France has limited their financial contribution, initially 25 000 euros annually to 9000 euros due to inflation and lowered revenue streams. We have no indication of how much they would give us next year. Our other sponsor, Wikimedia CH only finances project based proposals, and does not include salary fees to the amount that we would need to be able to perform well enough on such projects on top of all our other activities, which is why we are only asking them in 2024 to finance the annual convention of les sans pagEs as this is integrated in our regular activities. We are be able to leverage our own source of revenues, but this source is highly impredictable and fluctuates for the moment. We have relied on invoicing institutions for trainings in the past two years and were able to get near 5000 chf, using this to cover contingencies and unplanned expenses.
