Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your strategies and activities proposed were implemented and if any changes to what was proposed are worth highlighting?

The main strategies we adopted and implemented in our program were based on the following Wikimedia 2030 strategy recommendations:

Innovate in free knowledge: We improved on the Dagbani Wikipedia Saha tele-education program by providing more training support for facilitators as well as renting more equipment to increase the quality of production. Also, we provided translation for the learning materials and transcription for the video content for YouTube and Wikimedia Commons.

Invest in Skills and Leadership Development: Capacity building and leadership training programs were organized for community members. We successfully established a wikihub in Tamale College of Education to help connect Wikipedia to students and teachers, as well as educate them about Wikipedia policies and guidelines, and why they should be involved in contributing to Wikipedia.

Provide for Safety and Inclusion/Identify Topics for Impact: The user group as well as individual team members organized Art+Feminism contests to create and improve more articles relating to women on various topics

As a language community, we focused on creating partnership opportunities among our various language communities by co-organizing contests such as the WikiVibrance and Wiki Loves Earth 2022 in Ghana to increase youth participation on Wikimedia projects.

Improve User Experience: We embarked on a two month Wikidata challenge that led to a significant increase in the number of Wikidata Lexemes in Dagbani. We also organized a series of workshops to train language communities on how to use Wikidata-powered infoxboxes on their various language Wikis and incubators.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you feel are being effective in achieving your goals?

Our community engagement activities, such as workshops, edit-a-thons, and contests, helped us train and engage more volunteers to effectively contribute to projects. It provided an opportunity for people to come together in a safe and comfortable environment to learn, share ideas, and connect with each other.

Our Dagbani Wikipedia Saha helped members learn new skills, share ideas, and build networks beyond the Wikimedia community by collaborating and working together on projects within and outside the Wikimedia community. Additionally, it provided members with the opportunity to contribute to our projects and also feel a sense of belonging within the community.

3. What challenges or obstacles have you encountered so far?

Internet connectivity is our major obstacle so far during the production of the tele-educational program dubbed ‘ Dagbani Wikipedia Saha'.

There were more than enough community members who wanted to take part in our community engagement activities but our resources to cater for such numbers were limited.

Even though community members understood that our work is purely voluntary, gift voucher prizes awarded during contests were seen not to be motivating enough since they do not have internet data to participate.

The inadequate infrastructure at the TACE Wiki hub compelled the College to adopt a double track system which prevented us from getting access to all level students as some of them were mostly not on campus to attend our workshops.

4. Please describe how different communities are participating and being informed about your work.

We used our tele-education program dubbed Dagbani Wikipedia Saha to reach a large audience where we facilitated workshops on the rules of Wikipedia and its sister projects such as Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons, how to edit Wikipedia, how to upload pictures on Wikimedia Common and how to add structured data to Wikidata, how tools are used in automating edits.

As part of our efforts to bring on board all the 16 Mabia languages, we created WhatsApp platforms with the mass broadcast feature to automatically reach members from the Moore, Gurene and the two communities that were launched in December 2022, the Kusaal and Dagaare. Team members also honored interviews to television and radio stations in northern Ghana to educate the general public about our projects and wikimedia projects in general. Blog posts: We published blog posts via the Wikimedia diff platform to keep people abreast with the activities and projects the community embarks on. See some of our blog posts here. News portals: Digital news platforms such as Citinews, Sagani TV and radio stations have granted and published information on our projects and activities.

5. Please share reflections on how your efforts are helping to engage participants and/or build content, particularly for underrepresented groups.

Gender Identity: We have organize a series of Art+Feminism contests to create and improve more articles relating to women and also added dagbani wikidata labels and description to a lot of women wikidata items in other to bridge the gap between men and women on wikipedia

Linguistic / Language: We were able to incubate two more languages, Dagaare and Kusaal. These two languages happen to be some of the less known in Ghana, and we seek to leverage wikimedia projects to ensure their visibility on the internet.

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What have you learned so far about these areas during this period?

Dagbani Wikipedia Saha: our community members who could not make it to our training due to some reasons, are able to edit on Wikidata and Wikimedia commons at the comfort of their homes by watching our Tele-Educational program Dagbani Wikipedia Saha.

7. What are the next steps and opportunities you’ll be focusing on for the second half of your work?

The Dagbani Wikipedia Saha Season 3: A tele education program to educate people on how to contribute to Dagbani Wikipedia.

Parliament of Ghana Contest Series (4th Republic): It will document the various parliamentarians on the Dagbani Wikipedia.

Community Engagement Activities: The 2030 movement strategies would be discussed in our continued community engagement activities.

Establishment of Wiki Hub at the BACE and the university of education (school of languages)

15. Based on your implementation and learning to date, do you have any plans to make changes to the budget spending?

Yes

15a. Please provide an explanation on how you hope to adjust this.

We introduced a significant number of budget items that were not initially included in the original budget, this was a result of an afterthought of activities/expenses that were very crucial to the successful implementation of the project.

We also had to rework the budget and project to align with the approved amount for the project since the amount of funded was not the same as the funds requested.

16. We’d love to hear any thoughts you have on how the experience of being a grantee has been so far.

We have had a great experience as a grantee ranging from coordinating project activities, making sure timelines for activities are met, and making sure set targets are achieved.
