Part 1 Understanding your work edit
1. Briefly describe how your strategies and activities proposed were implemented and if any changes to what was proposed are worth highlighting?
- We suggested two main strategies: (1) to improve the “health” of the Korean Wikimedia community by increasing opportunities for collaboration would be to resume and scale up offline activities that were well-received by the community before COVID-19 and (2) to reduce the systematic bias and gender gap by increasing the diversity of editors and contents. During the half of this year, we focused on the latter.
a) We suggested activities such as the improvement of Old Hangul (Old Korean) documents on Wikisource, and Wikitampang photo walk on Wikimedia Commons, and we achieved the activities as we planned. We uploaded and improved a lot of Old Hangul documents, which have not been edited on Wikisource, and we could draw new editors who are interested in Old Hangul documents but haven’t edited Wikicousrce articles. We contributed to diverse contents on Wikimedia Commons and Korean Wikipedia by adding pictures of cultural monuments located in a rural area. b) We also collaborated with Seoul Youth Center to engage teenagers from low-income family in Wikimedia projects. We visited Mullae-dong area in Seoul took pictures of the area with the teenage editors, and the editors uploaded the pictures to Wikimedia Commons and improved some Korean Wikipedia articles. They were so satisfied with our activity that we decided to keep the cooperation with the Seoul Youth Center. c) We hosted an online edit-a-thon and we are holding a photo contest to improve LGBTQ-related contens on Wikimedia projects. We participated in Wiki Loves Pride project for the first time. We could encourage editors to edit articles that haven’t beed edited before.
2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you feel are being effective in achieving your goals?
- To achieve our goal and encourage new editors, we gave volunteer hours to them. We evaluated this strategy was very successful. Especially, we could draw new editors and encourage them to edit Old Hangul articles by giving volunteer hours according to article’s bytes they edited. We applied this strategy to our other activities. We gave volunteer hours to teenager editors who participated in the collaboration project with South Youth Center, and we could engage them in Wikimedia projects. The collaboration project was a kind of photo walk and aimed to draw teenage editors and encourage them to take pictures of an area that had lacked photos on Korean Wikipedia.
3. What challenges or obstacles have you encountered so far?
- Despite many efforts, Korean Wikimedia projects, especially Korean Wikipedia’s “health” is worsening. These days, Covid-19 outbreak was relatively relieved in South Korea, and Korean Wikipedia is competing with other commercial wiki services like Namu Wiki. In this situation, Korean Wikipedia’s users are significantly decreasing. We think we need new motivation and inspiration to solve the problem. We hosted a meeting to discussed over the issue and we talked about how to improve Korean Wikimedia community’s health.
4. Please describe how different communities are participating and being informed about your work.
- Korean Wikisource and Wikimedia Commons communities are participating in our activities. The Old Hangul project on Korean Wikisource was so successful that it has continued since last year, and some editors, who participated in last year’s project, kept editing this year. We also support Wikimedia Commons through photo walks and photo contests.
We collaborated with our organizations like Seoul Youth Center and Three Oceans. As we mentioned above, our collaboration with the Seoul Youth Center was so successful that we will keep running our activity with the organization. The Seoul Youth Center has a strong link with public schools and they help us to draw teenage editors from low-income family. Three Oceans supports the neurodiversity movement, and the majority of activists have autism. We could learn about neurodiversity and autism from the organization, and they helped us to list neurodiversity-related articles. We encouraged editors to the listed articles by giving them volunteer hours.
5. Please share reflections on how your efforts are helping to engage participants and/or build content, particularly for underrepresented groups.
- We engaged underrepresented groups in Wikimedia projects and improved diverse content on the project.
a) First, we developed interesting activities for teenage editors from low-income family and building partnerships with outer organizations. Seoul Youth Center reached out to the teenage students, and we taught them how to edit Wikipedia articles and upload pictures on Wikimedia Commons. Many participants answered that editing Wikipedia was too difficult for them in our last year’s survey, so we visited an area which lacked pictures on Korean Wikipedia, and encouraged them to take a picture of the area with their smartphone. The participants said they were satisfied with the activity in this year’s survey. b) Secondly, we cooperated with a partner to improve disability-related articles. We built a partnership with Three Oceans, a neurodiversity movement group, and we could learn about the movement and they help us to list articles related to neurodiversity and autism. We encourage editors to edit the listed articles. c) Lastly, we hosted an online edit-a-thon to improve LGBTQ-related content. We realized Korean Wikipedia lacks articles associated with sexual minorities while preparing for the online edit-a-thon. We will improve the relevant articles in cooperation with other organizations.
6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What have you learned so far about these areas during this period?
- We suggest some learning priorities in the applications, and we learned that using human network is very efficient to contact external organizations. In other words, it is effective that we encourage our members to pay attention to our activities and they introduce us to external organizations which they already know. For example, one of our members has autism and he knew an autism rights and neurodiversity movement group. He introduced us to the group and we could launch a new project in cooperation with the group.
7. What are the next steps and opportunities you’ll be focusing on for the second half of your work?
- While we put an effort to reduce the systematic bias and gender gap during the first half of this year, we will focus on our first strategy to improve Korean Wikipedia’s community “health.” The most important activity in the first strategy is our annual conference, and we will discuss Korean Wikimedia’s current issue and celebrate Korean Wikipedia’s 20th anniversary.
