Part 1 Understanding your work

edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.

The proposed activities and strategies were implemented through a multi-phased approach to empower LGBTQ+ individuals in Nigeria to contribute to Wikimedia platforms. Highlighted below are key processes and factors contributing to the outcomes:

Inclusive selection process: An open call for applications was launched, inviting LGBTQ+ individuals to apply for the fellowship. This approach aimed to ensure diversity and inclusivity within the program.

Comprehensive Training Manual: A training module was created to assist with training sessions and provide a guide. The manual includes videos and written explanations of research methodology, citations and references, and introductions to Wikimedia platforms (Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata).

Comprehensive hybrid training sessions: The training used a hybrid approach, with virtual sessions held before and after in-person training. The residential trainings were held in Oyo and Imo states respectively, providing the fellows with hands-on practical training. These sessions provided fellows with mentorship and resources to enhance their skills and contributions on Wikimedia platforms.

Step-down training: Fellows were assessed on the quality and quantity of their contributions to Wikimedia platforms. Three regional fellows (South-East and South-West) were selected to conduct step-down training in their communities. These trainings included a virtual session and an in-person training held in Ebonyi and Ekiti States, respectively in partnership with Community-Based Organizations (Hearty Empowerment and Rights Initiative and Access to Health and Rights Development Initiative), these sessions aimed to educate peers, bridge knowledge gaps, and raise awareness about using Wikimedia platforms to promote LGBTQ+ visibility and representation.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals?

Several strategies and approaches implemented were effective in achieving our goals, some of which are; Hybrid training framework Comprehensive training manual Step-down training Collaboration with community-based organisations and community building.

These strategies and approaches played a significant role in achieving the goals of the project by empowering LGBTQ+ individuals to contribute to Wikimedia platforms and fostering inclusivity and representation within the online encyclopedia.

3. Would you say that your project had any innovations? Are there things that you did very differently than you have seen them done by others?

Yes, the project introduced several innovative approaches to empower LGBTQ+ individuals and address the underrepresentation of LGBTQ+ voices on Wikimedia platforms:

Uniqueness: The project is pioneering in its approach, serving as a digital advocacy initiative that offers LGBTQ+ creative writers, photographers, videographers, journalists, and researchers a unique opportunity to utilise their diverse skills to represent LGBTQ+ individuals in Nigeria and address knowledge disparities through the Wikimedia platforms.

Hybrid Mode of Operation: The project adopted a hybrid operation mode, combining physical and virtual training sessions. This approach allowed for greater accessibility and participation, especially for individuals in remote or underserved areas.

Step-Down Training: Implementing step-down training sessions in grassroots regions such as Ebonyi and Ekiti States was innovative. These sessions aimed to extend the project's reach and empower LGBTQ+ individuals who may not have been able to attend the residential training sessions.

Multi-Focused Webinars: The project organised a series of webinars covering various topics such as Wikimedia user-friendly guides, digital security, and showcasing fellows' work. These webinars provided additional learning opportunities and fostered community engagement beyond the residential training sessions.

Collaborative Partnerships: The project collaborated with organisations such as Wiki For Human Rights Nigeria to organise contests and raise awareness about transgender issues. These collaborative partnerships enhanced the project's impact and facilitated broader community engagement.

4. Please describe how different communities participated and/or were informed about your work.

The project engaged with different communities through various channels to inform these communities about the work and encourage active participation. Communities that participated in our work are as follows:

Community Engagement: The project directly engaged with LGBTQ+ communities in Nigeria through outreach efforts, social media campaigns, and partnerships with LGBTQ+ organisations such as Hearty Empowerment and Rights Initiative, Access to Health and Rights Development Initiative, and Wiki for Human Rights Nigeria. These efforts aimed to raise awareness about the project, encourage LGBTQ+ individuals to apply for the fellowship and promote participation in training sessions and activities.

Inclusive contest: The project partnered with Wiki for Human Rights Organization to host a contest celebrating Transgender Awareness. The competition was open to all contributors and editors on Wikimedia platforms, the contest focused on adding new content and editing existing entries related to transgender individuals, thereby enhancing the representation of transgender content on Wikimedia platforms.

Online Platforms: The project utilised online platforms such as social media, forums and blog posts on our website to disseminate information about the project and engage with diverse communities. This included sharing updates, announcements, and success stories to inspire participation and foster community among participants and supporters.

Collaborative Partnerships: Collaborating with organisations such as Wiki For Human Rights Nigeria facilitated outreach to broader communities interested in LGBTQ+ issues and human rights advocacy. These partnerships helped amplify the project's message and reach new audiences beyond traditional LGBTQ+ and Wikimedia communities.

Part 2: Your main learning

edit

8. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

Here are some key learnings: Expanding Beyond Wikipedia: Initially focused on Wikipedia, we realised the importance of other tools like Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. Inclusive Selection Process: We broadened our criteria to include all LGBTQ+ individuals interested in contributing to Wikimedia, regardless of laptop access, to tackle marginalisation. Access to Wikimedia Experts: Limited access to experts hindered contributions. We plan to establish partnerships with more Wikimedia experts for better support. Citations and References: The lack of credible sources led to articles being flagged. We plan to collaborate with reliable media sources. LGBTQ+ Wikimedia Online Forum: Creating an online forum will build a sense of community, encouraging continued contributions and participation in edit-a-thons and contests. Self-Taught Virtual Classes: Incorporating pre-recorded sessions will aid learning and skill development, allowing us to measure fellows' commitment through metrics like attendance and participation. Residential Training Duration: The short duration limited impactful outcomes. Extending training sessions will allow for more in-depth exploration and hands-on learning. Unavailability of Laptops: Lack of laptops hindered practical exercises. Future projects may provide loaner laptops to address this. Mentorship Opportunities:Mentorship with Wikimedia experts will enhance enthusiasm and contributions, providing valuable learning experiences while actively contributing.

9. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?

The project had a few surprising occurrences during implementation:

Impact: One surprising moment was when someone from Canada reached out via our social media to express gratitude. He discovered an article by one of our fellows about his grand uncle, Dare Odumuye, on Wikipedia. This provided him closure and insight into his uncle's work, highlighting the global impact of our work.

Exploring Other Wiki Platforms: We were surprised by the discovery of Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. This led fellows to switch from Wikipedia to these platforms, finding them more suitable for data entry and multimedia representation.

Fellows' Content Creation: During residential training, it was surprising to see fellows' motivation and eagerness to contribute to LGBTQ+ visibility. They created rich, historically significant content, showcasing their strengths through various projects.

Post-Training Commitment: Fellows' growth and adaptation to using wiki tools post-training were overwhelming. They leveraged their experience with the Wikimedia in-residence, who provided continuous support.

Percentage of Contribution: Initially, Wikimedia platforms had less than 1% LGBTQ+ content. The project significantly increased this content, fulfilling its mission of enhancing LGBTQ+ visibility and representation on Wikimedia platforms.

10. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Extended Residential Training Duration: We will extend future training sessions to allow for more comprehensive learning experiences and deeper skill development.

Enhanced Resource Provision: To address challenges like the unavailability of laptops, we aim to provide loaner devices for participants.

Emphasis on Research Methodology and Citation Practices: We will place greater emphasis on research methodology and citation practices in future sessions. Additional guidance and hands-on exercises will help participants produce reliable content on Wikimedia platforms.

Continuous Feedback and Improvement: We intend to establish a robust feedback mechanism to gather input from participants, stakeholders, and allies throughout the project lifecycle. This feedback will guide ongoing improvements to meet the evolving needs of the LGBTQ+ community in Nigeria.

Collaborative Partnerships and Mentorship Opportunities: Building on successful collaborations and mentorships, we plan to expand these connections. Partnering with a diverse range of organizations and mentors will provide valuable support and resources, empowering LGBTQ+ individuals and enhancing project sustainability.

Step-down and Pop-up Trainings: We aim to expand our reach by increasing step-down training in Nigeria and organizing pop-up training in West African countries. These initiatives will enhance contributions' quality and quantity while promoting inclusion and diversity on Wikimedia platforms.

11. If you were sitting with a friend to tell them one thing about your work during this fund, what would it be (think of inspiring or fascinating moments, tough challenges, interesting anecdotes, or anything that feels important to you)?

One inspiring moment from our project was when someone reached out through social media after reading an article by one of our fellows about Dare Odumuye on Wikipedia. This person had never met their uncle and found the article provided valuable insights and a sense of closure. Their gratitude towards our organization and the Wikimedia Foundation highlighted the meaningful impact of our efforts. I would also share the incredible sense of community and empowerment during the project. Despite challenges, seeing LGBTQ+ individuals come together to learn, create, and advocate for representation on Wikimedia platforms was inspiring. The enthusiastic participation, collaborative spirit, and the transformative impact of amplifying LGBTQ+ voices globally reinforced the importance of our mission.

12. Please share resources that would be useful to share with other Wikimedia organizations so that they can learn from, adapt or build upon your work. For instance, guides, training material, presentations, work processes, or any other material the team has created to document and transfer knowledge about your work and can be useful for others. Please share any specific resources that you are creating, adapting/contextualizing in ways that are unique to your context (i.e. training material).

13b. Additional core metrics data.

Core Metrics Summary
Core metrics Description Target Results Comments Methodology
Number of participants Through this project, we hope to train 10 Nigerian queer persons in the 2 different geographical zone in Nigeria, which will sum up to 20. However, we hope to retain 2 participant as a fellow from each region, summing up to 4 fellows across the 2 regions.

These fellows will be mentored for a month, supported and equipped with the necessary tools and skills to conduct further training in their localities with a minimum of 10 participants in attendance for their own planned-trainings, this will be monitored and evaluated by both BAF personnel and the Wikimedian in residence. With an average of 10 persons being trained per region by each fellow, this equates to 20 rippled trained persons across the two regions.

We will also have virtual training for at least 50 persons during notable LGBTQ+ dates linked to the month of pride. In total, we are looking at training at least 40 in-person participants and 60 virtual participants.

100 69 The project successfully trained 59 LGBTQ+ individuals, covering various training formats including in-person and virtual step-down sessions. Registration form and attendance logs
Number of editors This project is expected to train not editors but curators and content developers who are queers and turn them into becoming editors on the Wikimedia projects.

We can estimate at least 20 editors will emerge.

Additionally, we will have returning editors from previous Wikipedia outreaches with Wiki for Human Rights Nigeria. New editors: 30 Returning editors: 20

50 26 The project effectively engaged 26 editors, slightly below the target of 50. This close accomplishment indicates a significant level of interest and active participation in contributing to Wikimedia platforms. Wikimedia dashboard
Number of organizers Beginning with a paid WiR role to deliver main training in all 2 geographical zones of Nigeria. A project manager from BAF and one main organizer for each state that we visit (2). Also, 4 fellows will be inducted, which will also organize their communities and plan edit a thon and meetups in their respective states.

Wikipedia We will encourage all trained editors to create at least one new Wikipedia article as part of the project (1x40 = 40).

Additionally, we will encourage and guide the participants on how to edit and improve other Wikipedia pages (20).

Also during the month of pride; we will launch a contest open to all Nigerian editors which is expected to curate at least 50 articles.

110 18 The lower-than-expected result is attributed to challenges faced by participants in providing references, leading to articles being taken down on Wikipedia. Wikimedia dashboard
Wikidata We will also ensure participants create Wikidata items(75). From the month of pride contest (75) 150 38 The project did not meet its target, potentially due to issues with providing credible references, which resulted in the rejection of some Wikidata entries made by participants. Further investigation is necessary to pinpoint specific obstacles and adjust training and support strategies to enhance future results. Wikimedia dashboard
Wikimedia Commons A lot of existing Nigeria LGBTQ+ biography topics on Wikipedia do not have images, and we understand the challenges with copyright. By partnering with ally LGBTQ+organisation, we will ensure the upload of at least 100 images 100 9 The project significantly underperformed against its target, with only 9 images uploaded out of the intended 100. This shortfall is largely due to copyright restrictions and concerns over security and legal prosecution, which led some individuals to decline the use of their pictures or videos on Wikimedia Commons. These issues reflect the serious risks associated with public visibility for LGBTQ+ individuals in Nigeria. Further efforts may need to focus on enhancing protections and assurances for participants to safely contribute to the platform. Wikimedia dashboard
