Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.

I am kind of surprised that some participants have already bought a 360 camera or sports camera. When they knew that you could use the photos with geo-coordinates tags to upload to streetview images gathering websites like Mapillary, and even could upload to Wiki Commons. For the total results, even though there are only two people updating OpenStreetMap map data according to the captured details in those streetview images, we have many participants upload their images taken using their own mobile phone lens or digital camera, using their own time to contribute to Wiki Commons. In the second half of our projects, we still drove hundreds of kilometers to explore those unfamiliar places in Taiwan, but we focused on taking photos for Wiki Commons, and adding multilingual descriptions.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals?

We thought that after Taiwan was in the post-COVID19 situation, everything was back to normal, but at least in civic tech or open source community, it is not the case. We have to recruit a new generation of contributors from scratch. Even though Taiwan has relieved its COVID19 prevention restriction, and finally totally abandoned the COVID19 restriction, the community activities are not the same. We might have to focus on basic workshops in the future, and not expect the new members to do any intermediate or advanced contributions. But for the core participants, that quickly made a huge contribution that I might not have expected, like uploading many Wiki Commons photos and linking to Wikidata items or inserting Wikipedia articles.

3. Would you say that your project had any innovations? Are there things that you did very differently than you have seen them done by others?

After we finished each survey tour and came back to our home, we might not have expected everyone could contribute right away editing OpenStreetMap data and uploading meaningful images to Wiki Commons. But using Dashboard to count the results of each streetview tour, it seems many particpants upload so many images. Even though Wiki commons support for 360 images is not perfect, at least we have a good platform like Mapillary which has good UI to view those processed images and make it usable on contributing to OpenStreetMap.

4. Please describe how different communities participated and/or were informed about your work.

It takes much longer to process the images after each streetview survey, and we all have day jobs to do. In the long term, we might get tired and frustrated. However we found during each streetview survey trip, that engaging the local communities is quite important, they give us guidance when we are outsiders and not familiar with the local community, which is quite useful while many of the places we visit are not all detailed recorded on an online platform like Wikipedia.

In our proposal, we mentioned that we want to add descriptions to Wiki Commons media files in Taiwan’s underrepresented languages, like Taiwanese Hokkien. it is quite hard due to we lack of people familiar with Taiwanese Hokkien writing system. In Taiwan, some aboriginal tribes working very hard to revive their own languages, and do not have spare resources to participate in our project.

7. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

Part 2: Your main learning edit

8. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

We have done well for the number of photos we took. After we adjust are methods of using our own device to capture meaningful pictures for reuse on Wikidata after uploading to Wiki Commons. But for the numbers of participants, we fall to reach the goad due to COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 situations. We already expect a low number of participants, but the reality is much worse than we expect.

9. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?

We kind of underestimated the total time and manpower we need, especially during the post-processing steps, need special software and knowledge. We also need people to manually pick up meaningful photos for Wiki Commons, which we find out quite stressful. So we adjusted our process to use our own camera for photos for Wiki Commons.

We also lack language experts who are able to write in common Taiwanese Hokkien languages like POJ or Hanji. They can help us write photos or common category descriptions on Wiki Commons, and also items on Wikidata.

10. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Our two survey tours which involved local communities, one in Kaohsiung and one in Tainan, are quite good. They just guide us to the destinations we might find interesting, like temples, churches, and tourist attractions. We took so many photos worth uploading to Wiki Commons, and during the process, we heard stories about the locals.

We have listed many organizations that might be interested in joining our events. Unfortunately due to the post-COVID19 situation, other organizations have their own mission and not be able to join our events. Hope in the future that these new organizations will establish and flourish, and have the manpower to help us during our survey trips.

11. If you were sitting with a friend to tell them one thing about your work during this fund, what would it be (think of inspiring or fascinating moments, tough challenges, interesting anecdotes, or anything that feels important to you)?

Both OpenStreetMap and Wikidata are small groups in Taiwan, even though OpenStreetMap contributors have grown in recent years due to the flourishing of online communication channels, most of the contributors are not fond of going out to participate in events. It seems it is reasonable to shift tasks to an online collaboration platform, and then gather like-mind in small groups to do the survey trips and capture street-view images for post-processing during workshops. We hope to focus on basic workshops and street-view survey post-processing workshops to get in touch with new-comers and hope one day they will join the community.

With the newly established Ministry of Digital Affairs in Taiwan, it is possible to pursue them to release the government's own content to the public domain, or at least with a CC-compatible license. Wikimedia Taiwan has good connections with the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, which collaborated on Wiki Loves Monuments, and recently has workshops to teach GLAM institutes’ staff how to compose Wikipedia articles or edit Wikidata.

We added up all the signup numbers from our event pages. we expected to have 210, but due to COVID19 and post-COVID19 situations in Taiwan, it is quite hard to achieve. Most of the partners lack man-power and time, it is easy to let them know what are we doing, but hard to recruit them to participant.

Most of us will agree we share a common goal under the Wikimedia Movement. But it is quite hard to do due to geographic and language barriers. Just letting other people know what we are doing is quite important. Write something to record our doing in English, and we appreciate translation or story-telling support.

I think it is quite hard for outsiders to know the Wikimedia or free knowledge concept. But however, at least they knew not only the Wikipedia projects but also Wikidata or other Wikimedia Movement-related projects when we spent time at events or promotional workshops.

I think the funding from the Wikimedia Foundation helped us increase the number of events we held. And also more exposure to outsiders. They might not show up due to the COVID-19 or post-COVID-19 situations. We have increased our involvement and will increase our core members' time on the Wikimedia Movement.

26. Are there other movements besides the Wikimedia or free knowledge movement that play a central role in your motivation to contribute to Wikimedia projects? (for example, Black Lives Matter, Feminist movement, Climate Justice, or other activism spaces) If so, please describe it below.

The main workforce is the OpenStreetMap Taiwan, whose members are quite overlapped with the Wikidata Taiwan community. We not only increased the Wikidata, and Wiki Commons contributions, but also the massively improved OpenStreetMap data quality in our survey trips area.

During one of the biggest open source events in Taiwan, COSCUP 2022, we shared what we do during our survey trips and workshops.

We published blog posts and shared our event on social media posts. And of course Wikimedia Taiwan's community channels. So I think other Wikimedia Movements participants are aware of our events.

In most of our events, like workshops, we use free-of-use event places like MozTW community space.

We could use these funds to have 4-6 streetview survey events and workshops. Due to the change of MozTW community space, if we want to hold workshop there, we might have to sponsor the space in 2024 due to Mozilla Foundation will cease to sponsor the space in Taipei.
