Grants:PEG/WM ZA/Wiki From Above 2015
The report for this grant can be seen here.
Background
editWikimedia ZA has the unique opportunity to host a photographic and video media competition with the organisers of South Africa's first drone festival to be held in Cape Town on the 1-3 May 2015. This event would allow Wikimedia ZA to encourage the local drone community to contribute content to Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia.
The festival is being organised by Alan Ball of Flying Robot.
- Number of people festival organizers estimate will participate in competition: between 250 (max) ~ 20 (min)
- Festival website: FPV Fest South Africa
Goal
editThe focus of this project is to increase the quantity and quality of aerial photographs and video media of important public landmarks in Africa. With a particular focus on content from drones.

Proposed judging formula
editThe judging formula has two objects, the first being to create media for as effective use on Wikipedia as possible, the second is to ensure that submitted media is of a high quality. With that in mind I am proposing the following scoring system:
Points will be awarded for the following:
- Can be used on a Wikipedia page = +5 points
- how effectively it illustrates the topic of that page = score out of 15 points
- Aesthetic quality of the media = score out of 10 points
- Refers to the overall aesthetic value of the submitted media.
- Technical quality of the media = score out of 10 points
- This refers to things like the steadiness of footage if video footage, the size of the uploaded file (High resolution preferred), and overall quality of the media image.
Activities
editThis pilot project aims to contribute high quality aerial media for use on Wikipedia. Particularly photographs and video footage of important public landmarks in South Africa as taken by air born systems most specifically drones. The competition will also be open to contributors wishing to contribute content from other air born platforms such as helicopters or planes.
Photographs and footage will need to be submitted on Commons using a similar system to that used by Wiki Loves Monuments. Content edited on Wikipedia will need to be proposed by the editor on a dedicated page on Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons.
Impact
editFit with strategy
editThis project meets a number of mission targets for Wikimedia strategic plan (through 2015). They are outlined below:
Increasing reach
editThis project will connect Wikimedia ZA with the local drone community in South Africa. A technically adept community well placed to both contribute content to Wikipedia as well as Wikimedia Commons. Previously most of our previous projects have focused on connecting with people involved in cultural or educational activities such as heritage and libraries respectively. This will be the first project by Wikimedia ZA that will be fore a section of South Africa's population that has a strong technology background.
Participation
editThis project will increase the participation of drone enthusiasts in Africa at large and Cape Town in particular. A community with the capability to produce and contribute remarkable content, especially media content, that would likely be a great asset to Commons.
Quality
editWikimedia Commons suffers from a lack of both video footage as well as aerial photographs. It has a particular lack of these sorts of media of places in Africa. This competition would increase the number of aerial photographs and video footage of places in Africa and Cape Town in particular.
Credibility
editThe involvement of the organisers of the Drone festival will give the organizers access to the Drone community in Cape Town and South Africa more broadly.

- Afrikaans Wikipedia
- Zulu Wikipedia

Measures of success
editWe will consider this project a success if we can:
- Increase the number of quality of aerial photographs on Wikimedia Commons
- Increase the number of quality of aerial footage on Wikimedia Commons
- Increase the number of aerial media taken in Africa on Wikimedia Commons
- Effective use of this media on Wikipedia
- Promote editing and contributing content to Wikimedia projects in South Africa generally
- Increase the profile of Wikimedia and Wikipedia amoungst this technologically savvy group of South African enthusiasts.
Resources and risks
editResources
editTeam members
- Douglas Scott Discott
- Alan Ball (festival organiser)
This grant is effectively an extension of: This grant is inspired by Wiki Loves Monuments and synergies exist between it and Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 in South Africa.
Risks
edit- No one will participate or participation will be limited
- Solution: work through the organisers of the festervil to promote the competition within the local drone community ahead of time.
- Participants will find the entrance and submission of content procedures on Wikimedia Commons overly complex and therefore not enter.
- Produce written guides and graphics illustrating the entry process. Setup a similar system to Wiki Loves Monuments to help streamline entrants is another option.
- Participants might find the option of only submitting content in .ogg format reduces the quality of their images to such an extent they are not comfortable participating.
- Open to suggestions on this one, if there is another video format that allows for higher quality submissions on commons that commons can accept then please tell me about it.
- Privacy issues related to drones and aerial photography
- This risk will be eliminated by only accepting or encouraging the submission of footage that is of public places that are of public interest and was taken in accordance with South African law. Any submitted content that is found to violate these rules will not be eligible to win a prize and will be nominated for deletion.
