Grants:PEG/WM HU/Wikipresentations/Report
Note: This report covers the activities and status of Wikimedia Hungary from July 2009 through June 2010, it does not include events and activities that are similar to the ones reported on but have happened after the grant period.
Project Goal:
The goal of this projects is to introduce people to Wikipedia and involve them in editing through holding presentations.
Description of actual activities:
The members of Wikimedia Hungary have held a number of presentations at universities, libraries, conferences and other organizations on the history, working and world of Wikipedia.
During the term of this grant, we have held the following presentations and lectures:
- 8 October 2009: A presentation held at the Economics Doctoral School of Corvinus University of Budapest
- 28 December 2009: Two of our members have participated in a round table discussion as part of the event "World Copy Day 2009". There were about 20 viewers present.
- 19 February 2010: A presentation held at the Statistical and Biological Physics Research Group of the Hungarian Academy of Science and Eötvös Lóránd Science University
- 31 March 2010: Presentation at the Internet Fiesta 2010 conference for librarians (number of attendees is hard to judge, somewhere between 50 and 150)
- 28 April 2010: One of our members gave a presentation on Wikipedia to students of Communication and Media at The Media Research Center at the Department of Sociology and Communication of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. There were about a 45 students present. (There are a couple of pictures uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.)
- 7 May 2010: We participated in the Re:museum conference organised by the Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art on our proposed cooperation with musea. (60-80 attendants of the conference were present.)
- 6 June 2010: A presentation on the implementation of FlaggedRevisions on the Hungarian Wikipedia at the Regional Conference of Wikimedia Serbia 2010 in Belgrade.
What lessons were learned that could help others succeed in similar projects?
The presentations we held were good and helped us strengthen our contacts with the organisations that have invited us, which will lead to future invitations.
Most of the above presentations were held as a result of invitations as opposed to proactive outreach - in the future we will focus more on the latter.
What impact did the project have on WMF mission goals of Increased Reach, Increased Quality, Increased Credibility, Increased and Diversified Participation?
The audience of the presentations were mostly people new to Wikipedia or non-editors and the presentations were aimed at giving a general introduction and in some cases to engage the audience in editing Wikipedia either directly or indirectly. Members of the audience were students, university professors and researchers, museum staff, in one case Wikipedians and in the case of World Copy Day "people of the street".
In the case of the presentations held at Corvinus University of Budapest and Eötvös Lórád Science University our aim was to involve the experts at the department in editing Wikipedia and making editing Wikipedia part of the curriculum for PhD students. Unfortunately, the PhD writing program didn't happen due to scheduling difficulties of the intended project lead at the university.
One of the presentations (the one in Belgrade) was at the conference of Wikimedia Serbia, where the attendants were Wikipedians from Serbia and various countries from the region and Central-Europe.
Detail of expenditures:
We have requested the money to fund travel and the cost of outreach materials by this grant.
Most of the presentations in the grant period have happened in Budapest or travel has been subsidized by a third party (or our members themselves), thus we have incurred no costs on that part.
We were not able to produce quality outreach materials in the grant period, and have incurred no cost on that part.
Amount underspent in US Dollars: 500
Will you be requesting re-allocation of remaining grant funding? Yes
