Project idea

edit

What is the problem you're trying to solve?

What is your solution?

edit

The Aphra Behn Society is an academic group tightly focused on issues of women and gender in the period 1640-1830. We can offer an introduction and get other academics inspired to contribute to the public knowledge project that is wikipedia. And we can honor one of our founding web-team leaders Adrianne Wadewitz, who first drew our attention to the gender disparity on wikipedia AND the utility of the public project.

Wikipediathon for the Biannual Meeting of Aphra Behn Society in honor of former ABO webteam leader Adrianne Wadewitz

Organizers: Laura L. Runge (University of South Florida) and Kirsten Saxton (Mills College) Date: November 4 from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm Where: The Grand Summit Hotel (570 Springfield Avenue | Summit, NJ 07901; V: 908.273.3000 ext. 164 | F: 908.273.4228; www.grandsummit.com ) Plan: the editors of ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640-1830 will organize a five-hour edit-a-thon with Karen Gevirtz, President of the Aphra Behn Society, as a pre-conference event in the conference hotel. We will advertise the event to our readers, the members of the Aphra Behn Society, the broader eighteenth-century scholarly community, and particularly the attendees of the conference (est. 150 participants). We will also reach out to the area FemTechNet group for support and instruction. On the day of the event, we will provide space, wifi accommodation, on-site support and introductions to Wikipedia editing for volunteers who want to participate. With sufficient funding, we will also provide minimal beverage and snack throughout the afternoon. We will also be live tweeting the event to our ABO followers (500+) to promote awareness of 1) Wikipedia feminist activism, 2) ABO, and 3) women in the arts 1640-1830. We will create an event page on Wikipedia as part of the promotion of women editors and women subjects, and to create a record of the production from the afternoon. Follow-up: we will create a community of the participants from the event to encourage the ongoing use of Wikipedia and Wikipedia editing in the classroom. We will host a panel on using Wikipedia and Wikipedia editing in the classroom for attendees of the conference.

Budget

edit

Costs:

Room rental $500.00 for the day.
Wifi $250.00.
Transportation Wikipedia Mentor $150.00
Total $900.00

Community engagement

edit

We will create a webpage on our society website, tweet to the journal followers, and create an event page on wikipedia. We will encourage online participation among our colleagues who cannot be present. We will also create a panel at the conference that addresses using Wikipedia and wikipedia editing in the classroom, with plans to develop a community page on wikipedia for follow-up. After the initial edit-a-thon and the follow-up panel on using Wikipedia in the classroom, we will plan to hold biannual edit-a-thons at the Aphra Behn Society meetings. We will also create a buddy-system mentoring program so that editors can follow-up on each other's work and encourage each other to keep involved. We will share successes and publicize articles created and approved through our journal and society networks.

Sustainability

edit

The Aphra Behn Society will hold regular edit-a-thons at the biannual meetings to evaluate and contribute to the articles on wikipedia related to our mission and to recruit and train new editors/contributors to Wikipedia.

Measures of success

edit

We expect to meet the following goals:

• Minimum of 20 participants
• 15 female participants
• 10 new editors
• 5 articles created or improved
• 50% of participants editing six months after the event

To measure these, we will use a pre-survey connected to the registration for the event and a post survey upon exiting, using Qualtrics and Wikimetrics.

Project team

edit

LLRungegordon -- I am new and enthusiastic about using Wikipedia as a way to disseminate knowledge to the public about the subjects of early modern women in the arts. I attended the LA Wikipedia edit-a-thon March 18, 2015 prior to the ASECS conference, and I want to continue this work. I would like to have a local wikipedia volunteer attend the conference to help with training and organizing the participants, but I will do the main work of preparing and promoting the event. I am the editor of the online journal ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640-1830, and a long time member (former leader) of the Aphra Behn Society. I have commitments from the society president Karen Gevirtz and my co-editor Kirsten Saxton -- but I am not sure of their wikipedia user names.
