We have organised 8 monthly meetups which were mainly devoted to the education program (ICCH224), student training, and general discussions related to Wikipedia movement.

Lessons learned edit

What worked well?
  1. The well-established arrangements of the photo contests worked well, and this year we have a new record for the number of submissions for the WLM.
  2. Physical meet-ups were very productive as we are building a stronger community toward becoming a future Wikimedia chapter.
  3. We were able to expand and maintain close relationship with our local GLAM partners.
  4. A total of 11 university students took part in the education program, ICCH224 (2015-16T3) and ICCH224 (2016-17T1). Ten were new users. High quality contributions were made to more than 12 articles related to chemistry in the English Wikipedia.
What didn't work?
  1. Due to time constraints we did not organise as many edit-a-thons as we would like.
  2. Retention rate of new editors was low.
  3. We wish to have more people with different skills and expertise to shorten the turn around time.
What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
  1. Get several local Wikipedia admins into the team or become admins ourselves and prepare well in advance.
  2. As we have implemented the Wikipedia writing assignment in multiple courses at a university level, we look forward to measuring the success of Wikipedia in the academic context (e.g, student learning, self-directed learning, suitability of Wikipedia for education) rather than using the ordinary means such as number of bytes, articles created, uploads.
  3. Since monthly meetups were successful, more will be organised in 2017.
  4. We plan to organise more article contests next year and make it more appealing. There are several ways to do so, for examples, change of topic, a different target audience and better advertisement. Combine these contests with physical meetups and edit-a-thons.
  5. We will be engaging in more international contests such as “La mujer que nunca conociste”, which will be hosted by Iberocoop:Portada.
  6. We are planning to parter with more local organisers in hosting our activities.

Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 short paragraphs.

Overall, we have achieved the original goals. We received the highest number of submissions ever for Wiki Loves Monuments. And as part of the two photo contests, we gained one more local partner, and we are looking forward to organising a photo exhibition later this year (Mid 2017). One of our organisers, Taweetham, is a professor at a public university in Thailand. He has implemented Wikipedia Writing Assignment in one of his courses since 2014. This is the first year that we included the education program as part of the grant report. Out of 11 students who participated in the education program, 10 were new users. Some continued to contribute to Wikipedia even after the course ended. Results of this year's implementation are tabulated below. It is also the first year ever to organise monthly meetup. It was an effective means to strengthen the community towards becoming a future chapter. Although expectations and results are met, there is always room for improvement. Number of editors involved in the WAM decreased from last year. This can be attributed to several reasons. The event may be perceived as "saturated", and did not attract as many editors as we thought. The advertisement before the beginning of the event might not be sufficient. Retention of new editor also remains a challenge.

Learning question
Did your work increase the motivation of contributors, and how do you know?
YES and no

YES: There were many people (>100) involved in the activities. We have inspired photographers to participate in our movement. We have organised edit-a-thons and meets ups. We have send t-shirts to existing volunteers/admin on Thai Wikipedia and partner organizations. Our physical presence definitely motivated so many people.

no: Some volunteers may burn out during the project and delays/unprofessionalism in some aspects may be demotivating for some people. We believe that it is an unavoidable side effect of the project of this scale.

What impact did this project have on WMF's mission and the strategic priorities?

Option A: How did you increase participation in one or more Wikimedia projects? By organising two photo competitions and education program, we have increased participation in three Wikimedia Projects

Option B: How did you improve quality on one or more Wikimedia projects? The nature of photo competitions is to archive the best quality compared to existing work on the projects. As part of the education program, we ensured that all uploads to the commons and text written in the English Wikipedia are of high quality. Students were asked to reupload a new version of the media if the quality did not meet the standard set by the instructor. To further ensure the quality of the added texts, students were also encouraged to peer review other students' work. Overall student's contribution was also constantly monitored by our campus volunteer, user:Athikhun.suw. The products will be set as examples of good quality work in three Wikimedia Projects.
