We hosted the lectures focused on GLAM-Wiki collaboration which were held in Yokohama and Kyoto. The Yokohama lecture was mainly aimed at librarians attending the Librarian Fair on the same day. In order to attract more GLAM professionals, we rented a conference hall in the same facility where the Fair was held. For the Kyoto lecture, Hanazono University provided its hall free of charge.
Ks aka 98, the coordinator and the lecturer besides Liam Whyatt, the GLAM Fellow, made a trip to Kyoto from Tokyo for the Kyoto meet-up. I would like the expenses associated with this trip be reimbursed as his trip was essential for the success of this project.
We also hired a professional interpreter for the both lectures.
Project scope
editWe are submitting this grant request to cover part of the expenses for the GLAM outreaching lectures on November 11, 2011 and November 13, 2011 as featured in “outreach:GLAM/Newsletter/November 2011/Contents/East Asia report”
In contrast to the presence of highly sophisticated GLAM facilities in Japan, we have seen little collaboration between Wikimedia projects and GLAMs. One of the reasons is that outreaching efforts has not been done much, and the academic aspect of Wikimedia projects is undervalued among GLAM professionals. The main purpose of this project is to improve the awareness of GLAM projects among Japanese GLAM professionals and to attract interested volunteers by providing the information about the past GLAM-Wiki collaborations, hot topics, and etc.
We do not assume that such Japanese GLAM-Wiki collaborations will happen in a day; however, we do hope that this projects foster positive relationship between GLAMs and Japanese Wiki projects for the future.
Due to the illness of one of the event coordinators, the submission of this grant request followed after the project was completed. Ks aka 98 and other members have paid the expenses to avoid the cancellation of the lectures after WMF purchased a ticket for Lyam to give a lecture as described below. Detailed project report will be made available soon after this request is approved.
Project goal
editThe goal of this project is considered achieved if it improved the interest and knowledge about GLAM-Wiki collaboration of GLAM insiders and volunteers. GLAM outreaching effort is at early developmental stage in Japan, and its progress is hard to measure in the numbers. We would like to continue the outreaching efforts using the feedback and experience gained from this project.
Non-financial requirements
edit- We invited Liam Whyatt, the GLAM Fellow as a lecturer. Thank you.
Other benefits
editSummary of the lecture is already made available at ja:プロジェクト:アウトリーチ/GLAM/Wittylama. In the past, users had to go over the English documents to learn about the GLAM projects. This can be a basis of the future discussions.
Measures of success
edit- interest by more GLAM facilities and professionals toward Wikimedia projects
- interest by general public for the Wikimedia projects
- improve the understanding of GLAM projects among Wikimedia volunteers
