What problem does this solve? edit

The association is regularly asked to set up training programs for different audiences. In October 2014, we were approached by Hadopi (High Authority for the Distribution of Works and the Protection of works on the Internet) to co-animate training on free licensing and on co-construction of knowledge through the Wikimedia projects to high school students.

These trainings are intended for a young audience which requires a special approach and an appropriate teaching animation. The codes and languages to be used are not the same as for an adult audience or for future trainers. Indeed, trainings for a young audience are generally done for teachers wishing to implement pedagogical scenarios with their students.

It is also important to note that this training place itself in a particular context because of the missions conducted by Hadopi. Indeed, some of them contradict directly the values of our association, including the promotion of copyright and some repressive methods implemented against users. The objective of Hadopi in its interventions is to promote a legal offer in which Wikimedia projects are included. For example Wikimedia Commons is highlighted by Hadopi as an image library.

What is the solution? edit

An employee of the association has positively responded to the request of Hadopi. A "pilot" Intervention has been held to assess its relevance and a future collaboration with the organization applying. During the training, we realized that students were more involved when we take suggestive examples (like some articles on which students had already contributed). That's why we thought it was important to set up fun educational games or scenarios to transmit concepts linked to the Wikimedia projects. We discussed the idea of implying structures specialized in introducing games and lesson plans related to content reuse, Wikipedia, copyright …

Therefore Wikimedia France began to look for structures offering this type of games and scenarios. Contacts were made and offers may also be considered in order to identify one or more structures capable of designing educational games on demand and train volunteers of the association at these games.

We have implemented several processes:

  1. Assess the upstream intervention request
  2. Respond positively to a request coming from an organization which values are different from ours
  3. Involve the education working group and solicit their opinions

Next steps edit

Regarding concrete actions, we plan to:

  1. Write a brief about an order of educational games
  2. Train association's members and partner with these games
  3. Establish an intervention schedule for the year 2015/2016

For the association and movement, we can generate benefits ...:

  1. Develop educational related activities
  2. Involve volunteers into training
  3. Improving visibility through an institutional partner
  4. Highlight the approval of the Ministry of Education

... But also disadvantages :

  1. Consider the availability of volunteers (mainly interventions on weekdays)
