How to make an Educational Editathon without a good Internet´s connectivity
problemIn many remote schools far away from the big cities, the Internet connectivity is not good. Especially if many people connect at the same time. Educational editathons seeking to value local histories, so to realize them in these cities is essential to create installed capacity with the local people. In many cases, the geographical distance is big, so have a trip by the WMAR Staff or volunteers is something that we can do once or twice, I have to be an important and complete experience where we can detect potential ambassadors to enroll.
solutionThe strategies are related to generate previously of the educational edithaton meetings and telephone conversations with virtual or local officials to: Promote previous research: to recover valuable materials, conduct interviews with key references, etc. Explain the editathon´s methodology and relieve existing digital resources: cell phones, computers, netbooks, etc. Create local teams with a strategy of division of online and offline activities for the editathon´s day: for e.g. different workstations that require Internet or not. In the workflow, all users publishers circulating different seasons, learn all processes and not saturate connectivity.

What problem does this solve? edit

In Argentina we perform many activities in provinces outside the main cities, where the Internet is an issue. Usually, we conduct a survey in advance to find out the technical situation of the town, its technological resources, etc. Knowing the state of the situation in advance, make us able to foresee the obstacles and drawbacks. Not only because they can carry their own devices (in many cases with 3g or 4g Internet connectivity), but because of the activities you may propose can be addressed differently.

What is the solution? edit

In October 2015 we made an educational editathon for more than 1,000 students in a province of Argentina. The Internet connection could not bear such amount of users online. For two months we worked with local teams to train students in Wikipedia, not just to teach them how to edit but to improve their role as researchers and knowdledge builders. All the students previously created their own wikipedia users and performed their draft papers on local history; per example they took pictures of their local contexts or collected material for scanning and digitizing. The day of edith-a-ton several work stations performed different activities that do not require full connectivity, but that make the upload of new articles that have been worked in advance, possible. This kind of events are the begining, then the leaders (already Wikiambassadors) encourage the students to continue editing and enriching their articles. In our experience in Misiones they even opened an educational webpage to follow the ongoing activities after the event. Not all the learning in the education field requires full internet connectivity. With an appropiate strategy and the teachers and students (Wikiambassadors) in your side, many work can be done in advance and other values, as building knowledge collaboratively, can be stablished in educational enviroments.
