WikiProjects are the community forums in which Wikipedians meet others for collaboration. These projects have a history of success in promoting article development and fostering cooperation between people who share an interest. To support WikiProjects, various tools have been created over the years, but unfortunately, these tools are insufficiently documented, work erratically, are not regularly supported or developed,
Project goals
edit- Set up a community forum in which part of a software developer's time goes toward meeting with non-developers and planning for management of WikiProject tools
- Strengthen better communication between MediaWiki developers and Wikipedia article contributors by establishing a project in which the most active contributors give guidance to developers about what they need.
- Desired tools might include the following:
- WikiProject setup wizard
- Setup of WikiProject in some standardized way designed by a user experience expert and then user tested
- Establishment of single "default look" for WikiProjects, which are currently all made from scratch
- There is no need to force conformity on anyone, but for those who do not care about personalization and just want something minimal which works, having a default option would relieve a lot of pressure
- Easier WikiProject tagging, including taskforce subcategorization
- Automatic setup of all the grading categories, which right are very hard to set up either manually or with the bot
- Automatic generation of the table recommending how articles could be graded
- metrics suite for WikiProjects
- generates pageview metrics for all articles in a WikiProject
- keeps records of which pages are changed often
- allows remixing of data to identify highly trafficked but non-developed articles
- "public watchlist" - tagged articles in a WikiProject are managed from some public interface
- membership module, so that joining a WikiProject is associated with a useraccount
- allows messaging within a WikiProject
- allows members to add curated segments of a WikiProject to their personal watchlist
- WikiProject setup wizard
