What is your solution?
editThe problem of inequality in employment is one of the most pressing issues of today the women have to face. The issues of gender inequality at work is being publicly reverberating for years and nothing much has been done for such concerns.
Men are considered an active role in the society whereas women are portrayed more as a cosmetic element, good only at rearing children, considered less efficient and incompetent in corporate world. One of the most prevalent issues is sex-based discrimination where men are given more importance than women for doing work. In terms of employment as well as promotion at work, women often face greater difficulties and feel struggling throughout their career. This is clearly exemplified as men getting priorities in getting better work opportunities and pay scale than their female counterparts, and the worst is that it is happening even in the developed countries. Such issues make women socially, economically, professionally, politically backward and less advanced.
Gender-based issues at work place have recently become an important topic of discussions that invites management to focus light on such raising concerns of women’s rights. These issues need to be addressed to ensure gender equality at workplace and demands concerted efforts at professional, and policy levels of the organization. The idea is to give equal opportunities to women to be professionally well-occupied, get reputed place in organization, treating them at par with men, giving them equal opportunities to do work and to show their talent and ensure growth at workplace. Providing just employment opportunity to women is not enough, employers need a dedicated long term gender strategy for their growth and development.
Study and Facts:
In technology, one of the fastest growing parts of the workforce; the problem is even worse. The Catalyst research shows that while 75% of women MBA graduates have technical backgrounds, only a third of them stay in technology, and 53% of women leave the technology industry after their first post-MBA job.
Leading companies are now exposing this issue: Google shows that 21% of their leadership and 17% of their tech workforce are women, and Facebook shows that 23% of their leadership and 15% of their tech workforce are women. These are all lower percentages than the general S&P statistics shown above. Silicon Valley in general is much focused on this issue - but it may take generations for engineers, computer scientists, and other minority and women professionals to make their way into the leadership pipeline.
Role of International Labour Organization:
The International Labour Organisation (ILO) also plays very important role in promoting equality between all women and men in the world of work. The primary objective of the ILO is to promote the opportunities for women and men to obtain decent and productive work in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity. Decent work is the converging focus of the four strategic objectives, namely rights at work, greater employment and income opportunities, social protection and social dialogue.
Important legislation for gender-based issues at work place:
Equal Remuneration Act of 1976, India: There should be payment of equal remuneration whether in cash or kind to men and women workers for same or similar nature of work protected under the Act. It also provides that the employers must not discriminate on the basis of sex in the recruitment of workers for the same or similar work, or in any terms or conditions of employment, such as promotion, training or transfer.
