Project idea

edit

Wikimedia Chile and Wikimedia UK have held "GLAM Wiki conferences" with the dual purpose of promoting GLAM activities in these countries as well as an opportunity to have active GLAMistas meet. There is a project page at GLAM_Wiki_2014_Mexico_City/en (English version) Dates are set for 24-26 April as well as the site, Tec de Monterrey The event is organized by the Wiki Borregos and the campus library and we are looking for suggestions, especially from those who participated in the two prior events as to activities and grant issues such as money to sponsor a certain number of Wikipedian participants. The first two days are dedicated to both cultural institution professionals and Wikipedians with the last day dedicated to topics more geared towards experienced GLAM people. Suggestions for this day are particularly welcome.

Project goals

edit

The most immediate is to reach a large number of cultural institutions in Mexico at the same time. While there has been outreach work done by Wikimedia México and the Wiki Borregos, progress is frustratingly slow due to many of the issues GLAMistas are familiar with. A fairly large, international event, with speakers from various perspectives at the country's largest private universities will go a long way towards impressing very traditional, somewhat isolated, institutions to rethink their ideas. Progress in Mexico will also have an impact in Latin America as well.

International participation is important because while Mexico is economically tied to the United States (and more recently with China), much of its cultural heritage is tied to Europe, especially true in the visual arts and music. In addition, The Tec de Monterrey as an institution is dedicated to helping Mexico achieve a more global perspective. Participation of GLAM people from different parts of the globe would not only help promote GLAM among Mexican institutions, it will allow for the exchange of ideas among ourselves and the institutions with which we work.
