Grants:IdeaLab/Avoid subcategorizing women
Project idea edit
What is the problem you're trying to solve? edit
Defaulting to maleness is a broad societal issue with a variety of across-the-board repercussions. On Wikipedia (and Commons, and probably elsewhere), it manifests itself in the form of categories that assume that constituent entities will be male until proven otherwise. It was likely never the intention of the category creators to minimize the role of women but the end result reinforces notions of the male norm/the female exception all the same.
What is your solution? edit
If we collectively agree that gendered subcategories of Foo must exist, then both Female Foo and Male Foo categories should exist, with all articles in category:Foo placed into one of them. Of course, Non-binary Foo would also be useful to have if there are any members of category:Foo who are neither female nor male.

- I'd be happy to start fixing this stuff again as soon as I figure out whether gender categories really are non-diffusing and how to add things in AWB without using find/replace. Ekips39 (talk) 05:19, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
