3D reconstruction of urban utopies: Vanvitelli & Caserta in 18th century (historical Wikimaps)

Project idea edit

What is the problem you're trying to solve? edit

3D virtual reconstruction of an historical - environmental context, with several urban and landscape heritages by using historical maps (at urban and geographical scale).

The project will be done within a school of technicians of buildings and in collaboration with local administration and released in open license.

What is your solution? edit

In 1750 the architect Vanvitelli planned the Royal Palace in Caserta under request of the king Carlo di Borbone.

This palace should have been the center of the ancient Campania felix province (previously based in Capua) and it was planned to have several offices and factories. Basically the plans were to rebuild the old town of Caserta (which was a small center with regional interest) in the new capital of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.

Caserta as planned by Luigi Vanvitelli

Moreover, the landscape represented an excellent environmental and climatic contest, from the beauty point of view. The original project stated a great royal palace, but also a new surrounding town and several environment structures (aqueduct, channels, roads, factories, farmers, mills etc.) in order to create an active economy around these buildings.

Unfortunately, only the Royal Palace with the park, the aqueduct and a few streets were built up (1752 - 1774) including several buildings to produce commodities (like San Leucio).

The project would recreate in 3D the original planned town following the plans of the architect Vanvitelli as per his archive preserved in the National Library of Naples.

The project will be done within a school of quantity surveyors in Caserta and released under free license. The students of the school will be followed by teachers specialized in CAD, also in 3D restitution. External experts (Wikimedia affiliated, if it will be possibile) could be partecipate for the 3D general aspects

He has already received the full support and assistance of the National Library of Naples.

Goals edit

By means of the 3D historical reconstruction, young people (students), citizens and tourists will be able to gain a visual virtual tour in the city of Caserta (as it was planned by Vanvitelli).

The 3D virtual reconstruction will reveal that Caserta landscape has deep cultural and historical heritage that could guarantee future development.

The goals are two:

  • educational: the students will work collaboratively to produce materal in free license and to contribute to Wikimedia projetcs
  • content: the recreation in 3D will be based in the research within the archives and will produce a high-qualitative material

Get Involved edit

Participants edit

1 project responsable, 1 project manager, 3 operative and community workers, 20 young students (techical high school) as 3D CAD draftsman

Endorsements edit

  • I followed the idea of this project and it seems to me a good project to be included in wiki-maps activities. Ilario (talk) 09:39, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
