This part presents plans for enhancing human diversity and content diversity in Wikimedia projects, while focusing on the Hebrew-Wikipedia community, and on two kinds of audience in particular: Women (to narrow the gender gap) and senior citizens and youths (to increase age diversity).
Note: Previously, we included these activities under the general title: support for the Hebrew-Wikipedia community. The relabeling is meant to better reflect the direction of these activities, which we established with time, based on our accumulating experience, and also to better align with the definition of functions within the chapter’s team. Nevertheless, all of these activities continue to contribute, each in its particular way, to the support we offer for the he-wp community.

In 2019, our activities for narrowing the gender gap saw ups and downs. The volunteer who led this field in the past stepped down, which forced us to to rely on other volunteers and different methods in order to keep these activities going. For example, we tried to organize special events about specific subjects and to cooperate with other nonprofits. Since many of these attempts did not live up to our expectations, we had to rethink the whole issue. We saw that narrowing the gender gap was already incorporated as an explicit or tacit goal of other fields of activity, and with much success. We therefore decided to turn it from a separate field of activities into a general goal, more deeply embedded in our various programs.
Accordingly, the goal of narrowing the gender gap is embedded in the 2020 work plan across various fields of activity, such as, the education programs in Hebrew and Arabic, the chapter’s events, and our courses for senior citizens (see below, throughout the document). In the second half of 2019, we plan to conduct a thinking process for establishing this goal more firmly in the various existing fields of activity. The products of this thinking process will affect our activities during 2020.
In addition to the above, we would like to promote during 2020 the narrowing of the gender gap by opening a special Wikipedia editing courses, that will specifically contribute to the fulfillment of this goal.
In 2020, we wish to continue our work with senior citizens by opening new classes of our designated editing course. In addition, we plan to foster the graduates of our previous classes. Whereas the center of this course is in Tel Aviv, we will continue to establish the additional center at the north of the country. We will open 5-6 classes with a combined number of 75 senior citizens, and foster our relations with about 150 graduates from past years through personal instructional sessions, editing meet-ups and other events, and offering opportunities to join the chapter’s community of volunteers. We will expand the publicity channels of this course and regularly monitor the effectiveness of the marketing process.
Narrowing the gender gap is a goal that will be considered while recruiting the candidates and deciding on the tasks that will be offered to them.
Activities at the Hebrew-speaking education systemEdit
Hebrew-speaking students will continue to write or expand articles and entries on Wikipedia and Wiktionary. Along with our longstanding cooperations with networks and academic programs for gifted students, this year, we will start cooperations with many new schools with the intention to produce high-quality content.
In 2020, 21 new teachers in 13 new schools will join the program. In an attempt to diversify and expand the activity, articles will be written in several new fields, among them: the Hebrew Bible, translation of short articles from English into Hebrew, new topics in history, literature (short stories, youth books). We assume that special effort will be required for training teacher and create lists of specific writing topics, therefore, our 2020 target is the writing or expansion of 360 articles on Wikipedia and 100 entries on Wiktionary.
We will continue our cooperation with the Center for Educational Technology (CET) and with the Ministry of Education (MOE). This includes online training courses for teachers of all levels and a new training course for Arabic-speaking teachers.
We will seek new cooperations with local libraries, which are an asset for promoting educational projects on Wikipedia.
Activities at the Arabic-speaking education systemEdit
Arabic-speaking students from different schools around the country will continue their contribution to the Arabic Wikipedia by writing and expanding articles. We will recruit new schools to the “Students Write Wikipedia” program and make every effort to preserve and foster our cooperations with the schools that already take part.
The “Ambassadors of Wikipedia” program will continue during the school year of 2019-20. Students will present Wikipedia in their schools by organizing activities on special designated dates, e.g. the Arabic Language Week.
The “Nibras Wikipedia” (“Torch of Wikipedia”) competition will take place in cooperation with an external organization. This competition is meant to be a means of exposure and a tool for recruiting at least one more school to the program.
Our activities with school will include the presentation of our new instructional website “Wiki Warsha” (“Wiki Workshop”) to students and teachers, and making it a central instructional tool in our school-oriented program.
Activities at higher-education institutesEdit
In 2019, our Academy Project went from a push marketing model to a model of pull marketing and support for returning lecturers. So far, this change has not harmed the project in terms of size or number of products, therefore, we do not plan additional changes in 2020. The pull marketing approach allow us to work with lecturers who are very committed to the project.

In 2020 we will expand our activities to add quality content to Wikidata. Wikidata content creation and enrichment activities will be done in collaboration with academia and GLAM institutes. Specifically, we will focus on data regarding heritage sites (in collaboration with the Ministry Of Jerusalem And Heritage), local film history (in collaboration with the Israeli Film Archive), and data regarding museum collection (based on the National Museum Portal). These activities will be partly carried our by M.A students from the Department of Information and Knowledge Management at the University of Haifa. In addition, our partners at the National Library will continue the work to synchronize their National Authority File with Wikidata.
Most of Wikimedia Israel’s programs offer instructional support for various audiences on how to use the Wikimedia projects and how to participate in their editing. The programs rely on instructional resources, which can be divided into two types: instructional material which we develop, and our team of instructors.
Development of instructional materialEdit
During 2020, we will put a special emphasis on completing the major developments that kept us busy in 2019. We will make an effort to market the “Wiki-Warsha” (“Wiki-Workshop”) website that teaches how to edit Wikipedia in Arabic. We intend to open a new site that will teach users in different languages how to make queries on Wikidata.
We will continue to update and develop materials for our various programs (such as the education programs and the senior citizens’ courses), as well as for the general public, based on requirements that arise from our contacts with the public.
Development in the team of instructorsEdit
The team of instructors is made of designated chapter workers and volunteers. In 2020, we would like to enhance the workers’ professional skills of using relevant technologies through professional workshops and other methods. At the same time, we would like to keep fostering the volunteers, as individuals and as a group that offers support, working and learning. This will be achieved by providing ongoing support and through our longstanding tradition of having online and real-life meet-ups. We would also like to expand the circle of volunteers, following a decrease in their number during 2018-2019.
Promoting awareness to Wikidata targets the general public, but is more focused on specifically relevant groups: people with the appropriate technological background (developers, programmers, analysts) or people who come from the field of information science. One of the major challenges of this project is to find new ways to increase the awareness and engagement of these groups. Last years’ experience shows that these target audiences are not keen on having face-to-face meetings. The 2020 work plan therefore includes promotion of the Wikidata project through webinars, films and a working model consisting of online editing and virtual meet-ups.
Marketing and eventsEdit
Several editing events were held during 2019, in cooperation with other organizations. In 2020 we will cooperate with these organizations again, to hold more editing meet-ups, as much as our partners’ resources allow. In 2020, we will also hold the regular events for the local community as usual.
We will also hold youth events for young Wikipedians, based on their request.
Fundraising and organizational infrastructure strengtheningEdit
In 2020 WMIL expects to raise more than 500,000 ILS. From this amount 340,00 ILS has already been promised. We will continue to fundrise micro-donation in different channels and hope to increase the percentage of the income that we get form them.
We hope to Implement CRM system during 2020. The CRM system will help us stay in touch donors, volunteers and foundations.
