After submitting the form, organizations will also meet with APG staff to discuss their progress.

Global metrics overview - all programs edit

We are trying to understand the overall outcomes of the work being funded across our grantees' programs. Please use the table below to let us know how your programs contributed to the Global Metrics. We understand not all Global Metrics will be relevant for all programs, so feel free to put "0" where necessary. For each program include the following table and

  1. Next to each required metric, list the outcome achieved for all of your programs included in your proposal.
  2. Where necessary, explain the context behind your outcome.
  3. In addition to the Global Metrics as measures of success for your programs, there is another table format in which you may report on any OTHER relevant measures of your programs success

Telling your program stories - all programs edit

Please tell the story of each of your programs included in your proposal. This is your chance to tell your story by using any additional metrics (beyond global metrics) that are relevant to your context, beyond the global metrics above. You should be reporting against the targets you set at the beginning of the year throughout the year. We have provided a template here below for you to report against your targets, but you are welcome to include this information in another way. Also, if you decided not to do a program that was included in your proposal or added a program not in the proposal, please explain this change. More resources for storytelling are at the end of this form. Here are some ways to tell your story.

  • We encourage you to share your successes and failures and what you are learning. Please also share why are these successes, failures, or learnings are important in your context. Reference learning patterns or other documentation.
  • Make clear connections between your offline activities and online results, as applicable. For example, explain how your education program activities is leading to quality content on Wikipedia.
  • We encourage you to tell your story in different ways by using videos, sound files, images (photos and infographics, e.g.), compelling quotes, and by linking directly to work you produce. You may highlight outcomes, learning, or metrics this way.
  • We encourage you to continue using dashboards, progress bars, and scorecards that you have used to illustrate your progress in the past, and to report consistently over time.
  • You are welcome to use the table below to report on any metrics or measures relevant to your program. These may or may not include the global metrics you put in the overview section above. You can also share your progress in another way if you do not find a table like this useful.

Edit-a-thons edit

JKCC Telugu Wikipedia Workshop
  • Telugu Wikipedia Workshop in JKCC, Guntur : As the first workshop held in Jagarlmudi Kuppuswamy Chowdary College (JKCC), Guntur, the event helped student participants create Wikipedia accounts and familiarized them with the guidelines and style of Wikipedia editing. The student Wikipedians later went on to improve Telugu Wikipedia quality by adding images to articles and fixing dead-end pages that do not have any inter-wiki links.
  • Approaching communities of interest : CIS-A2K has carried out a pilot project to conduct mini-workshops for individuals and groups of experts in various fields, including literature, films, science, and sports, as an approach to recruit new Wikipedians and improve the online content. The target experts, or the "communities of interest", contribute to Telugu Wikipedia by expanding content coverage, providing expertise and resources in various fields, as well as establishing inter-disciplinary and inter-regional networks for the Telugu Wikipedian community. Online and on-site mini-workshops both have been conducted for the communities of interest in Geology and Film Studies.
  • Expand topic coverage in Telugu Wikipedia  : Online edit-a-thons are conducted along with local Wikipedians to improve and create articles in topics that are underrepresented in Telugu Wikipedia, such as tourist sites in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. CIS-A2K also provides guidance and support to community's participation in nationwide edit-a-thons and global initiatives like Wikipedia Asian month. One of the community members observed that these activities help the community to come together and work more collaboratively.

Skill Building edit

Telugu Wikipedians Pranayraj1985 and Meena gayathri.s celebrating the completion of 100 Wikidays Challenge on Telugu Wikipedia Day
  • Training sessions in Hyderabad Wikipedia Meetups: As per the request of the Telugu Wikipedia community, CIS-A2K began small-scale training sessions in the Monthly Meetups in Hyderabad. Participants were trained in the use of citation templates and Wikipedia tools such as Twinkle, Wiki To-do, and PrepBio that would make their editing on Wikimedia projects much easier in general. By introducing these training sessions, the meetups have encouraged more new users in the region to attend.

Community engagement edit

  • Resource Exchange Program : To improve resource availability for Telugu Wikipedians, CIS-A2K has served as a liaison between the Wikipedian community and e-Resource repositories. The resources have helped two Telugu Wikipedians (User:Pranayraj1985 and User:Meena gayathri.s) complete their 100 Wikidays challenge.

To complete my 100Wikidays these resources have been useful, apart from that I thoroughly enjoyed creating articles on History & Personalities of Drama in and around Tenali and I thank (you) for providing me the resource

User:Pranayraj1985 demonstrated editing on Telugu Wikipedia at the Hyderabad Book Festival stall
  • Telugu Wikipedia stalls in book fairs : Initiated during the mini-TTT in Hyderabad, Telugu Wikipedians proposed the idea of a Wikipedia stall at major book fairs in Telugu-speaking regions. CIS-A2K has supported the community to set up a stalls in events, including Hyderabad Book Festival in late December, and Vijayawada Book Festival, which is considered as one of the largest in India. A similar stall was also set up in the Rajahmundry Book Fair but had a lower participation due to uncontrollable factors. As the events attract large crowds of Telugu-speaking book lovers and writers, community members used the stalls to raise awareness on Telugu Wikipedia by handing out pamphlets and making demonstrations. With the help of the community members, some event-goers had created accounts and learned about basic Wikipedia editing. A readers' survey was also handed out during the events to understand what people would like to read on Telugu Wikipedia.

Quality improvement efforts edit

Know how-Wikipedia content translation tool by Pavan
  • Machine translations clean up : From 2009 to 2011, Google ran their well-known presentation "Google Translate Project" in Indic Wikipedias. Third party vendors hired by Google had translated articles from English Wikipedia to Telugu Wikipedia (along with many other indic language Wikipedias) using Google's Translation tools. Despite its goal to improve Indic language Wikipedias, the project was considered as vandalization as the pages contain large amount of incomprehensible language, redlinks, template problems, broken file links, etc. With the requests from the Telugu Wikipedians, A2K has helped the community to learn the use of Wikipedia translation tool to rewrite the articles more efficiently. A video tutorial was also created for the purpose. As some Wikipedians reflected that Google Translation Project has created too many unnecessary and low quality articles, a framework has been developed to prioritize which articles to be rewritten, improved, or deleted during edit-a-thons.

Pending activities or Upcoming plans edit

  • Improving diversity in Telugu Wikipedian community: Although we have been trying to maintain a balanced gender composition of event participants, there has been a lack of gender gap-related thematic events (both online and offline) in the Telugu community. As a result, more gender gap initiatives and events will be planned and carried out in the coming months. Activities will also be planned to increase the engagement with differently-abled people.
  • Advanced Wikisource user session: An advanced Wikisource user session will be held in February 2017 to help existing Wikisource contributors familiarize with digitization tools like OCR as well as other advanced and more efficient editing features.
  • Outreach beyond Telangana and Andhra Pradesh: More outreach activities outside of the current active states will be carried out in the following months to include more Telugu speakers in different regions into the Wikimedian community.
  • Photowalks and image-a-thons : Adding images in Telugu Wikipedia articles is one of the priorities decided in the Telugu Wikipedia Workplan and in previous community discussions and activities. A2K is planning to conduct Photowalks and to re-license photos to increase the multimedia files ready to be used in Telugu Wikipedia.

Quote edit

As a metric, # of bytes added or deleted in Wikimedia projects is one of the very important metrics. Even though this is not going to tell very little about quality, this metric is far more better than and also encouraging than Edit count. To find how many bytes added or deleted in a project during an event or by a user will help you understand better about contributions. Also importantly one should not consider 20 kb added and 5 kb deleted will be 15 kb of contribution, actually deleted bytes give you information partially about quality improvement activities.
