Global Wiki Advocacy Meet-up/FAQ

Who is this meeting for?

edit

We expect to bring together professionals that are working on advocacy projects for the Wikimedia projects.

What are the goals of the meeting?

edit

Based on the responses of over +100 participants on the Meeting Engagement Survey collected as part of our grant application, we have identified three main goals of this meeting:

  • Identify strategies and tactics to face the challenges posed by Internet regulatory developments that have been identified as relevant around the world for the Wikimedia movement.
  • Improving advocacy capacity building and knowledge sharing among Wikimedians.
  • Strengthen the network of Wikimedians interested in advocacy and public policies.

In which languages will the meeting be held?

edit

The main language of the meeting will be English. Unfortunately, we will not have live translation.

Will Wikimedia Chile be providing visa support?

edit

Yes, we intend to support those needing a visa to travel to Chile. However, bear in mind that we might only be able to provide support for visas to Chile. If you need an in-transit visa to the Schengen space (Europe), the United States or any other country that requires you to have an in-transit visa, you will have to do it on your own. We will do our best to avoid flights that require in-transit visa.

Can I apply for the scholarship in my own language?

edit

We appreciate the multilingualism that currently exists in Wikimedia communities. However, for this process, we kindly ask you to submit your scholarship application in English or Spanish, since we don't have time or capacity to translate every application into English. If English is not your first language, you can always use an online translator service to translate your application from your native language to English.

Beware that the meeting will be held mainly in English.

How the Scholarship Committee will grade scholarship applications?

edit

The members of the Scholarship Committee will grade applications based on the following criteria:

  • Applicant's professional background, qualifications, and experience on the topics of the meeting.
  • Particular contributions the applicant could make to the meeting and the network of Wikimedians.
  • Diversity and inclusivity.

Make sure that you have these criteria in mind when replying to the questions on the form.

Aside from that, remember that any scholarship applicant has to be in good standing with the Friendly Space Policy and the Universal Code of Conduct. Applicants will be screened for any violations to the UCoC or other global bans that might prevent them from participating in any Wikimedia event.

How many scholarships are available?

edit

We will grant 20 full scholarships to Wikimedia representatives and 5 partial scholarships for participants coming from outside the Wikimedia movement.
