This page edit

Magnus Manske, what is the purpose of this page? It's linked from http://tools.wmflabs.org/geograph2commons/ --Redrose64 (talk; at English Wikipedia) 15:08, 1 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Can this be made to work with Geograph-de? edit

I have tried to upload a file from geo-en.hlipp.de or geo.hlipp.de (essentially the same, the former is in English, the latter mostly in German). I changed the server name accordingly, typed in the image number, clicked "Run", and nothing happened. Am I doing something wrong? --Schlosser67 (talk) 08:57, 26 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

In the meantime, I have tried to upload some more files and have met with some success, but also with some failures. It appears that only those files could be successfully uploaded from geo-en.hlipp.de on whose pages (not only in the title!) there were no special characters whatsoever (umlauts, eszett, accented letters). For instance, I never managed to upload pictures from Baden-Württemberg or Köln, or anything with "-straße", "-café" or "-gebäude" in the title or the description. Is this perhaps the reason for the observed inconsistencies? Besides, the script, as it is, still inserts "geograph.co.uk" in the comment section even if another server is used as the source. --Schlosser67 (talk) 10:16, 10 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I have been trying to upload some images from geograph.org.uk for several days and nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong or is this temporarily down? Thanks, Eddaido (talk) 03:40, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't work with some Geograph images edit

I'm not sure what the problem is, but the tool does nothing when certain Geograph IDs are input. One factor seems to be the number '3' at the beginning of the ID. An example of a photo that wouldn't transfer for me was http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3793136 . Kelly (talk) 15:08, 29 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This is another file with a special character in the description - it seems to tie in with my observation regarding files from the German geograph project. --Schlosser67 (talk) 18:45, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
This special character is presumably the "ç" in "façade", Unicode U+00E7. --Redrose64 (talk; at English Wikipedia) 07:41, 12 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I have had some success with initially rejected ones, if you manually reduce double spaces to single spaces in the new name field then it often allows you to upload them. I don't know if they are actually double spaces or a space and an invisible character. WereSpielChequers (talk) 12:57, 17 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Standard headlines edit

Hi, when i saw this upload i wonder why the tool is not using the standard headlines: == {{int:filedesc}} == and == {{int:license-header}} ==. Could you please implement that? Thanks, --Arnd (talk) 12:15, 19 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing happens edit

I wanted to upload this image [1] so I placed geo.hlipp.de as server, 34127 as image and pressed run. But nothing happend. What went wrong?--Avron (talk) 08:54, 24 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

See above: The description contains an umlaut, apparently the script does not work with any non-7-bit-ASCII characters anywhere in the text of the page with the original picture. --Schlosser67 (talk) 12:52, 3 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing happens (reprise) edit

I've used this tool successfully many times over the last couple of years. But every attempt I've made in the last few days has been silently ignored. I press the run button and precisely nothing happens. Pretty sure that there are no special characters around. I've tried it on a number of different images, too many to mention, but here are two:

- Chris j wood (talk) 17:19, 5 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Same problem for me too. Greenshed (talk) 18:09, 10 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

...and it's stopped working for me too. I press the run button, there's a pause, and then it gives the intriguingly unhelpful message, "ERROR: Warning". And stops. Is anyone reading this talk page, or is the tool dead? Cnbrb (talk) 08:56, 17 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Magnus Manske the Geograph2Commons tool is broken. Cnbrb (talk) 08:55, 18 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's stopped working again today. Hello?? Anyone there?? Cnbrb (talk) 16:26, 7 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
So it turns out that this only happens with one photo in particular. Possibly the punctuation in the title is throwing the code? Anyway it's working for other photos, so you can relax now. Cnbrb (talk) 19:47, 9 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm getting the same "ERROR: Warning" problem with this image today. There's no punctuation there, so they must have something else in common. --Lord Belbury (talk) 08:05, 5 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hit it again with this photo this morning, which has a hash symbol in the title. --Lord Belbury (talk) 09:27, 14 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

For the sake of error logging I'm getting a silent failure on https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/125512 this morning, which has no special characters anywhere that I can see. --Lord Belbury (talk) 10:55, 25 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Another failure on https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4315198, again with no special characters apparent. --Lord Belbury (talk) 09:42, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

And another on https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5873886. --Lord Belbury (talk) 18:39, 15 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Problem uploading specific image edit

I have used Geograph-to-Commons without problems, but a specific image won't work for some reason: SU4829 : Tomb of Mary Sumner. Can someone else try using the tool to upload this image and work out if there is a problem? Carcharoth (talk) 11:07, 9 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I also get the occasional failure such as this nature reserve, as far as I can see there are no special characters in the filename, so it isn't likely to be the problem mentioned in an earlier thread. I had thought it might be a filesize issue as this is a big image, but Carcharoth's above is smaller than many that I have uploaded. This tool usually works very well so it would be good to fix the bug. WereSpielChequers (talk) 06:38, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If it's true that (as someone says above) "the script does not work with any non-7-bit-ASCII characters anywhere in the text of the page ", both of those images use left/right curly apostrophes in their descriptions. --Lord Belbury (talk) 10:29, 14 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Is this tool dead? edit

Geograph-to-Commons is still hanging at "Uploading" with no user feedback. Multiple posts on this page since 2017 and issues raised on the Bitbucket page have gone unacknowledged by the developer. I think it's safe to say that he's given up and this tool is no longer functioning. Don't waste your time hoping someone will make it work. Cnbrb (talk) 13:13, 19 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Not working, is there an alternative edit

This hasn't been working at all for several months. Is there an alternative tool? Mtaylor848 (talk) 16:57, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You won't get a reply. You'll have upload manually, sadly. Cnbrb (talk) 08:20, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
For the record, I still find this tool helpful as it creates a template which can be used with new images which are manually uploaded. It can also be used to fix the problem created by the geograph template now used for the automatic upload of images which does not pick up the image's description in geograph. The template does not allow any text to be added, so the only alternative is to replace it with a standard template generated with this tool. I hope this tool is not removed. Lamberhurst (talk) 13:40, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Better it was removed than it sits there trapping people into wasting hours trying to use it and wondering what we are doing wrong. The current situation is a mess - at the least it should warn the unwary that it won't work however many hours you spend finding files you want to upload and then rebooting PCs and WiFi. Just thought I'd pop back after 2 years to see if anything's been done, but the tool is still broken. @Magnus Manske: no response after all this time? Cnbrb (talk) 23:31, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
