- Abstract
The Linked Data for Production (LD4P) initiative will share progress on two projects that use Wikidata as a key element in linked data creation and reuse workflows in libraries. Current library metadata relies on string-based identifiers for personal names, place names, topics, and other authoritative entities. These sets of authoritative entities have been converted to linked data models, but are not easily incorporated into a linked data creation workflow, nor are they easily extensible to include additional types of identifiers for new resources or discovery needs.
Because Wikidata is an easily accessible and extensible structured set of identifiers, it offers a solution to these obstacles and promises to play a key role in library metadata workflows in a linked data world.
In the first project, Harvard University is modeling a workflow for integrating linked data descriptions and historic paper map digital images from the Harvard Map Collection with Wikimedia, to create a scalable prototype that can be applied in other libraries and to other types of library resources. In the second project, Cornell University and the University of Iowa are developing Wikidata reconciliation services that can be integrated with cataloging workflows or run as separate semi-automated batch processes to improve existing descriptions through the addition of links to related entities. Both projects will be supported by a Wikipedian-in-Residence.
We will present preliminary answers to the following questions:
- how is Wikidata best integrated into linked data workflows in a library setting?
- what types of authoritative data are ideal for managing in Wikidata?
- what policies and tools will support efficient and useful creation of identifiers in Wikidata?
- what are the elements of an effective collaboration among libraries and Wikidata?
- What will attendees take away from this session?
Ideas for incorporating Wikidata into library metadata creation workflows; best practices for working with a Wikipedian-in-Residence; early plans to integrate metadata creation tools with Wikidata.
