Abstract
Running simultaneous Wikimedians in Residence (WiR) and how we helped them become self-sustaining. In 2016-17 Wikimedia UK were at a point where we had around 5-7 active residencies, recently past residencies and possible residencies on the horizon, but we found that with new residents and different host organisations, some of the same questions and the same challenges were coming up again and again.
  • How do we stop new WiRs having to reinvent the wheel every time?
  • How do we manage to support multiple residencies with limited resources?
  • How is an often-isolated resident trained, sustained and supported?
One thing we did was to start looking at the residents as a teaching and learning resource in themselves, so this session will cover how we started using residents themselves to help answer the three questions above, as well as some other elements of project design, and our developing ideas about how to run effective residencies.
What will attendees take away from this session?
  1. An understanding of how Wikimedia UK approaches its WiR projects, some ways we differ from other movement residency projects, and why we do so
  2. Some of our ideas about scaling-up a WiR strand of programme and using WiRs as a resource in themselves
  3. An invitation for anyone running, or considering running WiR projects to get involved in our skillsharing network for WiRs
