Abstract

The Wikimedia community in Côte d'Ivoire made her first steps within GLAM-Wiki world with some hassles. The challenges faced by our community are not unique but inherent to other West Africa communities such as Ghana and, in a certain sense, to some other communities from under-represented regions. Lack of equipment, poor infrastructures such as Internet, no room for activities, skepticism from GLAMs, poor understanding of what types of GLAM-Wiki activities can be run, etc.

However, local volunteers found tactics such as the #1Lib1Ref campaign to work around these constraints, build partnerships and run editing activities with GLAMs. The talk underscores some key constraints faced, some strategies put in practice by local Wikimedians, and some benefits of these collaborations in terms of content creation, awareness and engagement among GLAMs, etc.

Some presentations related to this topic were made at Wikimania 2017. The current submission, goes further and highlights strategies used to overcome challenges as well as the impact of such strategies.

What will attendees take away from this session?
  1. Better understanding of challenges faced while partnering with GLAMs in West Africa
  2. Tactics followed to overcome local challenges, some of them being inherent to under-represented regions
  3. Ability to use #1Lib1Ref campaign for leveraging GLAMs partnerships
