Engaging GLAM institutions with Wikidata - Sharing Experiences and Techniques
This session is designed as a brief background presentation that leads directly into a discussion and brainstorming activity to identify the best practices and most effective ways to engage GLAM institution with Wikidata-oriented projects and activities. The rise of Wikidata as a central metadata hub for cultural institutions has provided a new dimension to GLAM engagement since the last GLAM Wiki conference two years ago that requires a different approach and mindset than Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons.
The session, designed to be accessible to beginners and intermediate Wikidata users, will address the following topics in addition to those raised by attendees:
- Best practices in the instruction of Wikidata basics (presentation formats, visualizations, compelling case studies and data sets)
- Engagement methods for meetups and working sessions (gap analysis techniques, edit-a-thon exercises and ideas)
- Contribution of institutional authority control records and identifiers (Mix'n'match, Open Refine, data cleanup tools)
- Mass donation of statistical data or multimedia content (Quickstatements, Google Sheets tools, APIs)
- Tools for visualizing, inspecting and modeling ontologies (Wikidata Graph Builder, SQID, Vizquery, Wikidata Query, among others)
- Innovative applications of Wikidata (WikiProject Sum of All Paintings, Crotos, Histropedia, WikiCite, Wikidata-driven infoboxes)
As a whole, and in smaller working groups, attendees will be asked to share their own best practices and experiences and new ideas on how to excite GLAM institutions with Wikidata projects.
The session builds off the speaker's experience in working with institutions in the United States, such as the Smithsonian Institution, Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Library of Congress.
- What will attendees take away from this session?
- An understanding of the potential and issues pertaining to Wikidata engagement and GLAM institutions
- A definitive list of example Wikidata projects that have excited and activated GLAM partners
- A compendium of useful tools and techniques for initiating Wikidata-oriented GLAM engagements
- An ability to identify and develop new ways to use Wikidata in new GLAM engagements
- Slides or further information
Andrew Lih is an active member of Wikimedia DC, and the author of The Wikipedia Revolution: how a bunch of nobodies created the world's greatest encyclopedia. While a professor at American University, he created a class based on GLAM-Wiki engagement with the top cultural institutions in the Washington DC area. In 2016, he was named the US National Archives Citizen Archivist of the Year for his classroom work and the advancement of Wikimedia content at the Archives. He has been an advisor to the GLAM-Wiki US Consortium and has helped organize leadership training at GLAM Boot Camps in the U.S. (2013-2016).
He has given talks about Wikidata at numerous GLAM institutions and conferences, including the Smithsonian Institution, Library of Congress, Metropolitan Museum of Art, OCLC, Wikipedia Day NYC and Wikimania 2017. His training materials have been an exemplar for others in the movement – his Wikidata one page guide (wikidata.org/wiki/WD:1) has been translated into many different languages and his training slide deck has been by others in the GLAM space for Wikidata training (bit.ly/siwikidata2017). He has participated in the prominent Wikidata-oriented conferences – WikiCite and WikidataCon, and contributed to a Wikidata documentation sprint at Wikimedia Hackathon.
