- Abstract
Anne Frank is an icon of Dutch and Jewish culture. In 2014 I noticed there wasn't a good image of Anne Frank available in Wikipedia / Wikimedia Commons. Most Wiki language versions featured photographs of statues, busts or waxworks -some of them no wonders of imagination. I tried to find a non-copyrighted photograph of Anne Frank. As was to be expected, this was not easy. Most photographs were made by family members of Anne Frank, and were tightly guarded by the Anne Frank Foundation in Basel. When I found a suitable (1940) photograph, I checked dozens of books and even more websites on Anne Frank, to see if I could find the name of the photographer. I didn't. I contacted the NIOD (Netherlands Institute of War Documentation) and the Anne Frank Foundation in Amsterdam. By doing this, I tried to sort out the copyright situation of this photograph. In my GLAM-Wiki-talk I will tell about the outcome of this search. I will also address some aspects of Dutch and US copyright. At the end of my talk I will tell about what happened after I uploaded the image to Wikimedia Commons, in September 2015.
