- Abstract
- In June 2017 New Zealand began its journey towards establishing a GLAM-wiki community. The Auckland War Memorial Museum hosted its first Wikimedian in residence allowing the author to create connections between a host of Wikipedia editors and the Auckland Museum. The initiative brought visibility to previously underrepresented topics on Wikipedia such as female fashion designers and Māori artists. Progress was made and there is still a long way to go. This talk provides an overview of GLAM-wiki collaborations occurring in New Zealand as well as fleshing out the obstacles faced. The most prominent challenge is respectfully integrating indigenous cultural knowledge into Wikipedia. While there are many international case studies to draw on as guidance, there is still uncharted territory within each unique setting. In New Zealand concerns remain around intellectual property status of indigenous knowledge and if Mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge system) is compatible with Wikipedia formats. This talk does not resolve these challenges but acknowledges the path forward for our institutions will be as unique to New Zealand as the indigenous knowledge system found there. The way forward requires a slower road to be taken, one that ensures that indigenous knowledge shared on Wikipedia enriches, not dilutes, the culture it originated from.
