Designed by Le Corbusier, Chandigarh Museum and Art Gallery is the one of the leading museums of North India, it has centuries old collection to modern contemporary art collection. Some of the important collections are, Basholi, Kangra, Rajput and Mughal paintings, Gandhara sculptures, Pahari miniature painting and contemporary Indian art. Although, it is a popular museum, it’s collections has little or no coverage on Commons.

Work to be done

We plan to educate museum staff about the importance of crowdsourced model of internet archive for Media of museum, like Wikimedia commons, Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikisource and free licenses and copyrights. We would awareness and training workshop with GLAM Staff and teach them about values of Wikimedia, and how GLAM institute like them can better promote their museum with collaboration with educational organizations such as WMF.

Activities in Progress

Meetups with staff and the Museum Director about GLAM wiki and importance of Wikimedia in conservation of precious art and would be developing work plan with them soon for the digitization.

Natural History Museum

This place exhibits featuring fossils, model dinosaurs, exquisite hand-embroidered pictures of birds and a diorama with a caveman using an electric torch to illuminate his cave art. The documentation of the museum will be done under Wiki Loves Heritage commons project with photo-walks after the commons training workshop with volunteers. The categorization and other metadata will be edited/corrected by volunteers for precise information in events co-ordinated by WiR.

Chandigarh Architecture Museum

This museum has collection showcasing important history of chandigarh’s planning and development, including the abandoned plan of Albert Mayer and the Natural History Museum.

A photowalk will be done for all three museums under the pilot of Wiki Loves Heritage Project of Wikimedia Commons that we are hoping to later advance on global level with old heritage GLAM Institutes that have important historical cultural content but are have no online presence due to cultural or resource access problem.
