It's a bit of an idealistic design, inspired by WikipediA's idealistic character: people from all over the world and with all kinds of backgrounds - symbolised of course by the different colours, much like the olympic rings - writing this knowledge database - hence the pencils - duh!

As you will see quite clearly, I'm not a professional designer, and even getting this fairly simple design took quite some effort, so if anyone wants to improve it from here on, feel free!

The font I used for this logo is Gill Sans, my favourite font, but it may be a bit too clinical for this. Fortunately the word 'WikipediA' is against a white background so the font, as well as the text can easily be changed.

Have people not been reading the instructions, or what? Out and out W-shapes won't do. -- Kwekubo

OK, just a bit in my defense: it's not called 'instructions', it's called 'guidelines' and secondly, have you read the first guideline for inspiration? It mentions specifically having a letter as a basis idea. Sorry to correct you but I think yours wasn't fair criticism. Hwebers

Oh yeah, and please don't call me 'people'.

Its rather unusual for all the logo to consist of pencils, when all Wikipedia consists of is 0s and 1s. - user:zanimum

True, but of course the picture itself is built up as lots and lots of 0s and 1s... after all, it's a computer file!  :-) Hwebers

Hwebers: Yes, they are termed as guidelines. I apologise for that, but the Inspration section is not part of those guidelines, but a freely editable section for ideas. I don't agree with the person who suggested a letter as an idea, as it goes against the aims of the internationality issue this logo project was set up to correct. Not all foreign language names for Wikipedia begin with W - some don't even use the Roman alphabet at all - making a "W" unsuitable for a large number of versions. And as far as the use of the word "people", I meant what I wrote. Look through the pages of logo designs, and you will see many that are centred totally on the idea of a "W" shape. I chose to put the comment here as this was the most recent occurence of such a logo at the time - where else could I have said it? And, sorry if this is a blow to a work which you have said you put a lot of effort into, but it won't work as an International Logo for the reasons I have given. Kwekubo 13:29, 27 Aug 2003 (UTC)

True, Kwekubo, it is not a suitable logo for the reasons you gave and I agree entirely. So, sorry about being a bit aggressive in my first reaction. I guess the hormones have calmed down again! :-) There are loads of companies that have their names or first letters in their logo (SONY, COCA COLA, SHARP, AMAZON, YAHOO etc), but the strongest symbols - I feel - are always the simple ones without letters or words (SHELL, LONDON UNDERGROUND etc.). So, granted, this logo should not be the winner, but then again I also hope that none of the ants- or bees-logo's become winners because they are not very original either... (and too complicated). Sorry again, Kwekubo, certainly no hard feelings or sleepless nights. Hwebers
