Az hu:Ősrobbanás elmélete szerint a w:hu:Világegyetem egy végtelenül sűrű szintularitásból ered. Az idő múlásával a tér tágult, és a csillagászati objektumok (például galaxisok) egyre távolabb kerültek egymástól.

A képen a Világegyetem különböző időbeli képei láthatóak az ábrázolhatóság kedvéért csak két dimenziós képként.

Vegyük észre, hogy a tér tágul, a w:hu:galaxisok (és más struktúrák) távolodnak, de maguk a galaxisok nem tágulnak, mert a w:hu:gravitáció összetartja azokat.
Slovenčina: Podľa teórie Veľkého tresku vznikol vesmír z nekonečne hustej singularity. Vesmír sa s postupom času rozpína, čím sa objekty od seba vzďaľujú.

Táto ilustrácia ukazuje abstraktné "rezy" priestorom v rôznych časových bodoch. Je značne zjednodušená, pretože zobrazuje len 2 dimenzie, aby sa dala pohodlne zobraziť aj časová os.

Ako sa vesmír rozpína, galaxie a iné objekty sa od seba vzďaľujú, avšak ony samé sa nezväčšujú, pretože sú držané pokope gravitáciou.
