Summary

Description
English: High-temperature superconductivity

- Hight-temperature superconductors (HTS) become superconductive at a temperature close to the temperature of boiling of liquid nitrogen (LNT) (but always higher than this). The materials belong to the class of ceramics; the composition is formally oxides of barium, yttrium/lanthanum and copper. Part of the copper is trivalent. When a strong magnet (e.g. neodymium one) is placed over the superconductor below the critical temperature, the magnet induces circular current which by itself imposes a magnetic field around the superconductor, with an opposite orientation of that of the permanent magnet used. As a result, the magnet levitates above the superconductor (Meisner effect).
