Wiki Loves Monuments is an international photo competition to promote historic sites around the World through Wikimedia projects (mainly Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia, and Wikidata). Everybody with a Wikimedia account can participate.

This year Belgium and Luxemburg participate again. You are encouraged to submit photos of monuments in Belgium and Luxemburg between 1 and 30 September 2024. By uploading your photos to the competition, you share our heritage with the rest of the world. We explain below how to participate, what you can win and what monument sites are eligible.

Why participate?

Participating in Wiki Loves Monuments, the largest photo competition in the world, helps Wikipedia to document monuments and heritage buildings.

Participating is fun! By photographing and sharing images of heritage, you can explore more about Belgium and Luxemburg heritage and learn about it. It's a nice challenge to improve your photography skills, and you can win nice prizes. The national jury will select 10 images that will represent Belgium and Luxemburg and compete in the international finale. More information about the international competition is available on the international website.

You can also upload images that you may have taken during one of your foreign travels to the respective national competition of other countries.

Competition rules

There are a few rules to participate in the contest. Let's quickly go through them. Every submission should be:

  • Personally taken and uploaded;
  • Uploaded during September 2024;
  • During the upload process, you give permission to re-use the image under a free license;
  • It contains a listed monument, which you have identified using the monument identifier;
  • Since 15 July 2016 Belgium has freedom of panorama, including permanent public exhibitions. This means that you are allowed to take photographs from a public place.

Next to that, there are a few practical rules:

  • You should have registered an e-mail address to your Wikimedia account so that we can contact you if you have won;
  • Please enlist by clicking on the registration button top right of this page;
  • If the photo gets deleted for any reason, it is disqualified from the competition;
  • You are responsible to obey the law and any local restrictions while taking and uploading the photo.

If you want to upload images of immaterial or movable heritage, please participate with the Wiki Loves Heritage campaign that Wikimedia Belgium also organises this summer. The images of both contests will be evaluated by the same jury.

National Prizes

In October, the national jury will evaluate the photographs and select the best 10 pictures of the monuments in Belgium and Luxemburg to relay to the international finale. The international jury will then announce the international winners in December.

A national prize in cash is foreseen:

  • First prize: 500 €
  • Second till 5th prize: from 400 till 100 €;
  • From 6-10th prize 50 €.

Judging criteria

The jury will determine the winners of the international contest taking into the consideration the following criteria:

  • Technical quality (minimum resolution, sharpness, use of light, perspective etc.);
  • Originality;
  • Usefulness of the image for Wikipedia.

Images that reach a top ranking in the international finale, will typically at least fulfill the Featured picture candidates rules at Wikimedia Commons. But feel free to submit many images, and let the jury evaluate if they are good enough.
