Overview
editClimate change is touching every facet of our lives, and Africa, in particular, is feeling its severe effects. News reports from various African countries highlight the challenges, with some facing devastating floods and others grappling with drought-induced food insecurities. Governments and youth organizations in many African countries, including Ghana, have been increasingly recognizing the urgent need to address the impacts of climate change.
The government of Ghana is developing and implementing policies aimed at mitigating and adapting to climate change, such as regulations on emissions, sustainable land use, and the protection of natural resources, among others. Young researchers and innovators are also conducting studies on climate change impacts specific to Ghana, which can contribute to evidence-based policymaking and community resilience strategies. Considerable documentation exists regarding Ghana's policies and adaptation strategies. However, these valuable resources and information often suffer from low visibility on the web, and their content is occasionally challenging to comprehend due to the use of complex English. We have also seen that not many Wikipedia editors like to write about this subject, as it can be complicated . Moreover, many of these existing articles on Wikipedia are not up-to-date. This visibility gap not only affects the broader public but also hampers informed decision-making among policymakers, researchers, and practitioners.
Proposed Solution:
editAs part of the WikiForHumanRights 2024 Campaign: Knowledge We Need for a Sustainable Future Women for Sustainability, Africa aims to address this challenge by collaborating with the Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Studies (C3SS) Department at the University of Ghana. We also will consult expertise from CDKN and Youth Climate Council during the engagement and training process. Through a series of collaborative activities, we will:
- Map Knowledge Gaps on Wikipedia: Engage C3S students in a mapping exercise to identify gaps in English Wikipedia articles related to climate change, sustainability, and gender in Ghana. This exercise will serve as a class assignment, utilizing both manual listing and list-building tools to compile a comprehensive project work list.
- Empower a Community of Knowledge Experts: Conduct training sessions for C3SC students on Wikipedia editing, Wikimedia Commons upload, content translation, and Wikidata. These sessions will equip students with the skills to effectively contribute to Wikipedia articles.
- Build Knowledge on Wikimedia Projects: Organize writing, editing, translating, and photo upload activities to contribute content related to climate change, sustainability, and gender in Ghana on Wikimedia projects. This includes improving existing articles, creating new ones, and documenting environmental issues through images and videos.
- Create Awareness: Utilize curated photowalk videos and images to advocate for environmental and ocean pollution awareness in Ghana. These materials will be shared with relevant agencies to educate the local population and promote behavioral changes toward sustainability.
- Increase visibility of information about the department on Wikipedia
- Engage Wikimedia volunteers to leverage resources from the University of Ghana C3SS to bridge knowledge gaps around the topic
