AFRICA WIKI CHALLENGE 2025 BANNER

Open Foundation West Africa (OFWA)’s Africa Wiki Challenge is an initiative designed to generate and enhance African content on Wikipedia, with a particular focus on issues that are central to the African continent’s history, development, achievements, and ongoing struggles. The annual competition strives to enhance information about Africa on Wikipedia and its sister projects.

Often, African-related articles on Wikipedia are either stubs or lack videos or photos to provide visual context and enhance credibility. This inadvertently diminishes interest in reading existing African-related articles on Wikipedia. It's evident that Africa as a whole faces a notable deficiency, particularly in terms of content representation on Wikipedia.

This year marks another exciting chapter in our journey to amplify Africa in the online information space. As we embrace the digital age, the fifth edition of the contest invites participants from across the continent and diaspora to join us in this initiative to expand and enrich the representation of Africa and African-related content across the World Wide Web, especially on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. For far too long, Africa’s rich history, diverse cultures, and ongoing struggles for justice and reparations have been underrepresented or misrepresented in global digital spaces.

Happening from May 25th to July 31st, 2025, the Africa Wiki Challenge is empowering individuals and communities to contribute to the world's largest repositories of free knowledge by sharing insights and contributions that will lead to a better understanding of our continent across borders.

Theme

edit

In 2025, the Africa Wiki Challenge will focus on the theme "Reclaiming Our Narrative: Justice for Africans and the Diaspora through Reparation", aiming to address the historic injustices of colonialism, slavery, and systemic exploitation while advocating for reparations for Africa and its Diaspora. This year’s theme aligns with the African Union’s movement for justice and reparations and aims to amplify the voices of those impacted by historical and contemporary injustices.

The initiative seeks to enrich global understanding of reparations and elevate the voices of Africans and their descendants through the creation and enhancement of content on Wikipedia, focusing on the historical, social, and political realities that shape the reparations debate.
