Elef Millim project

The Elef Milim (“а thousand words” in Hebrew) project brings together Wikipedians for fun educational activity aiming at enriching the free image repository with pictures of sites, buildings and landscape in Israel and the West Bank. It is a series of field-trips to different sites in the Holy Land, organized and guided by those Wikipedians who are experienced in tourist guiding, history and/or geography.

In Hebrew Elef Milim can be translated as “a thousand words” - a reference to the proverb a picture is worth a thousand words - or as “a thousand miles” - a reference to a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

The project's initiator is Rotem. The last Project Director was Deror Avi.

First Trip: German Colony

Participants in the first Elef-Milim field-trip to Jerusalem

The first field trip was to the German Colony of Jerusalem. Tamara guided the tour with Ido. Ten Wikipedians and supporters joined the first trip which was held on Friday, January 26th 2007.

Second Trip: Tel Aviv Zoological Garden

Third Trip: Mishkenot Sha'ananim

The third field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 25th May 2007 in the Mishkenot Sha'ananim - the first neighbourhood built outside the walls of Jerusalem. 16 Wikipedians attended the field-trip, which inclued a guided tour with an official tour guide of the Yad Ben Zvi Institute and a luncheon at the Beit Shmuel Hotel.

Forth Trip: Rehavia

The third field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 4th August 2007 in Rehavia - a neighbourhood built outside the walls of Jerusalem in the 1920' and 1930's. 12 Wikipedians attended the field-trip, which inclued a guided tour with an official tour guide of the Yad Ben Zvi Institute

Fifth Trip: Mount Scopus, Kidron Valley and Gehenna

The Fifth field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 19th October 2007 from Mount Scopus, through Kidron Valley to Gehenna - around the easten and southern walls of the old city of Jerusalem. 13 Wikipedians attended the field-trip, which inclued a guided tour with an official tour guide of the Yad Ben Zvi Institute.

Sixth Trip: Haaliya and Allenby Streets in Tel Aviv

The Sixth field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 26th October 2007 from Haaliya Street to Allenby Street in Tel Aviv. 8 Wikipedians attended the field-trip, which emphesized on the urban and architectural development of the area.

Seventh Trip: Katamon

The 7th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 28th December 2007 in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Katamon. 11 Wikipedians attended the field-trip, which inclued a guided tour with an official tour guide of the Yad Ben Zvi Institute.

8th Trip: Nahlaot

The 8th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 8th February 2008 in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Nahlaot. 10 Wikipedians attended the field-trip, which inclued a guided tour with an official tour guide of the Yad Ben Zvi Institute.

9th Trip: Talbiyeh

The 9th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 11th April 2008 in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Talbiyeh. 11 Wikipedians attended the field-trip.

10th Trip: The Knesset

The 10th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 20th May 2008 in the Knesset in Jerusalem.

11th Trip: Eastern Jerusalem

The 11th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 20th May 2008 in the Eastern part of Jerusalem.

12th Trip: The Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem

The 12th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 8th August 2008 in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. We were able to visit the remains of the Nea Church, built in the Byzantine period, which is usually not open to the public.


13th Trip: Holy Sepulchre

The 13th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 26th September 2008, and emphasized on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem.

14th Trip: Ein Karem

The 14th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 31st October 2008, and emphasized on the Churchs of the Ein Karem the birthplace of John the Baptist, west of Jerusalem.

15th Trip: Mount Herzl

The 15th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 2nd January 2009, at the Israeli National Cemetary at Mount Herzl located at the highest point in Jerusalem, where we saw the various monuments and memorials.

16th Trip: The Lower Aqueduct in Armon Hanatsiv

The 16th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 30th January 2009, at The Lower Aqueduct which was recently discovered in Armon Hanatziv neighborhood located south of the Old City of Jerusalem.

17th Trip: The Weizmann Institute of Science

The 17th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 6th March 2009, at the Weizmann Institute located in Rehovot.

18th Trip: Mount of Olives

The 18th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 14th April 2009, at the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.


19th Trip: Neve Sha'anan and Shapira neighborhoods of Tel Aviv

The 19th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 26th June 2009, at the Neve Sha'anan neighborhood and the Shapira Neighborhood of Tel Aviv.

20th Trip: Beit Govrin Area

The 20th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 8th August 2009, at the Beit Guvrin subterranean hiding systems.

21st Trip: Great Makhtesh (Makhtesh Hatira) and Mamshit

The 21st field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 28th August 2009, to the Great Makhtesh (Makhtesh Hatira) and to the Nabataean city of Mamshit (Memphis) in the Negev desert.


22nd Trip: the German Colony of Carmelheim and the Bahai Gardens

The 22nd field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 25th September 2009, to the German Colony of Carmelheim in the Carmel Center in Haifa and to the Bahai Gardens.

23rd Trip: Mount Scopus

The 23rd field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 16th October 2009, to the Hebrew University campus on Mount Scopus in Jerusalem.

24th Trip: Kfar Etzion

The 24th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 6th November 2009, to to Kfar Etzion in Gush Etzion on the northern part of Mount Hebron.

25th Trip: The Israeli National Maritime Museum

The 25th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 22nd January 2010, to the Israeli National Maritime Museum in Haifa. This tour was the first tour of the "Wikipedia Loves Art Project" - a project to upload images of the museum's exhibitions to the commons, and also to write wikipedia articles based on the explenations provided by the museum's staff. The project was enabled by Wikimedia Israel (the Israeli chapter of the Wikimedia foundation) who negotiated with the Maritime Museum and convinced the museum to enable photography (which they generaly do not allow), and of course, with the assistance of the Museum who provided guides for the tour.

26th Trip: The Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem

The 26th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 5th February 2010, to the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. Channel 10 news team followed the tour and it became a news item.

27th Trip: The Old City of Acre (Acco)

The 27th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 5th March 2010, to the Old City of Akko. The tour guide was one of the city councilwomen and a local resident of the old city, who introduced to us the residents of the old city.

28th Trip: Herodium

The 28th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on 9th April 2010, to the mountain desert fortress of Herodion built by king Herod the Great near Bethlehem south of Jerusalem.

29th Trip: Nahariya

The 29th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on Friday, 7th May 2010, to the northern city of Nahariya.

30th Trip: The Muslim Quarter in Jerusalem

The 30th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on Tuesday 18th May 2010, to the Muslim Quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem.

31st Trip: Ramat Rachel near Jerusalem

The 31st field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on Friday 11th June 2010, to the Kibbutz of Ramat Rachel near Jerusalem. During the tour we visited the Kibbutz, heard about the discoveries in the archeological site were a large palace from the First Temple period has been discovered, and unriddled the odd discoveries there. We also saw various sculptures such as the Olive Columns by the artist Ran Morin, and have met with the artist.

32nd Trip: Yagur

The 32nd field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on Friday 6th August 2010, to the Kibbutz of Yagur near Haifa.

33rd Trip: Mount Carmel

The 33rd field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on Friday 5th November 2010. It was a geological trip to geological sites on Mount Carmel near Haifa.

34th Trip: Bnei Brak

The 34th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on Friday 3rd December 2010, to the religious city of Bnei Brak.

35th Trip: Jerusalem: Musrara, Ammunition Hill and Notre-Dame

The 35th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on Friday 18th March 2011, to the city of Jerusalem. We visited the neighborhood of Musrara, Ammunition Hill and Notre-Dame de Jérusalem.

36th Trip: Sataf

The 36th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on Friday 15th April 2011, to the Sataf nature reserve near Jerusalem.

37th Trip: Wolfson Medical Center

The 37th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on Friday 24th June 2011, to the Wolfson Medical Center in Holon.

38th Trip: Hartuv

The 38th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on Friday 8th July 2011, to the agricultural colony of Hartuv in the Judean lowland near Beit Shemesh.

39th Trip: Old Haifa

The 39th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on Friday 2nd September 2011, to the old city of Haifa in search of the remains of Ottoman Haifa.

40th Trip: old Jaffa

41st Trip: Kafr Qara

The 41st field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on Friday 18th November 2011, to the town of Kafr Qara in Wadi Ara.

42nd Trip: old Jaffa

The 42nd field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on Friday 9th December 2011, to the neighborhoods Neve Tzedek and Ahuzat Bait in Tel Aviv.

43rd Trip: Netanya

The 45th field-trip of Elef Millim project took place on Friday 23rd March 2012, to the Armenian Quarter in the Old Cityof Jerusalem, and especially in search of Amenian Cermics we visited The Armenian Room at the Jerusalem House of Quality, St. Andrew's Guesthouse and Sandrouni's workshop.

46th Trip: Baka

47th Trip: Hadassah Trail

The 47th field-trip of Elef Millim was held on Friday 25th May 2012 Shavuot eve, to the Hadassah Trail. The trail surounds the grounds of Hadassah University Hospital, Ein-karem.


48th Trip: Kfar Kama

The 48th field-trip of Elef Millim was held on Friday 22nd June 2012, to the Kfar Kama in the lower Galilee Israel. We were in The Circassian Heritage Center and learned about the Circassian culture.


49th Trip: Baqa al-Gharbiyye

50th Trip: Afula

The 50th field-trip of Elef Millim was held on Friday 27th July 2012, to Afula. The tour guide was Hebrew Wikipedian Abraham Amir ,who wrote the Hebrew Wikipedia Entry on Afula.

51st Trip: Givat Ram

The 51st field-trip of Elef Millim was held on Friday 23rd November 2012, to Givat Ram Jerusalem Israel. The tour included The Kennesset, The Menorah, and the Archaeological Wing in the Israel Museum.

52nd Trip: Dizengoff Center

The 52nd field-trip of Elef Millim was held on Friday 14th December 2012, to Dizengoff Center Tel Aviv Israel. Aliza Toledo, one of the architects of the Mall and Shmuel Flatto-Sharon it's entrepreneur, gave presentations on the history of the builing and it's cultural meaning.

53rd Trip: Pardes Minkov

The 53rd field-trip of Elef Millim was held on Friday 8th February 2013, to Pardes Minkov. Pardes (Orchard) Minkov is a reconstruction of an Orchard in the city of Rehovot. It's demonstrates the ways Orchards were run towards the begining of the 20th Century.

54th Trip: Hussamssa

The 54th field-trip of Elef Millim was held on Friday 3rd March 2013, to Hussamssa Holon Israel. Later we went to the Holon Story Gardens, depicting well known Children's stories.


55th Trip: Afula

72nd Trip:Beerot BaNegev

The 72nd field-trip of Elef Millim was held on Friday 12th June 2015, to Beerot baNegev Heritage site in Kibbutz Alumim. The tour was held in the new visiting center and the Water tower outside of the Kibbutz.

73rd Trip:Rosh Pina

The 73rd field-trip of Elef Millim was held on Friday 12th November 2015, to Rosh Pina. We toured through the restoration center, the renewed Rishonim Street, The Altar Hotel and The American House.

74th Trip: Weizmann Institute Laboratories

The 74th field-trip of Elef Millim was held on Friday 15th April 2016, to the Laboratories of the Weizmann Institute of science. We toured through the Laser's lab, the Zebrafish lab, Clean rooms, Weizmann's house and an Ant lab.
