Introduction

The acceptance and acknowledgement of the #1Lib1Ref campaign have garnered great outputs in Wikimedia platforms. For us in the EduWiki, it creates spaces for more insights into learning and advocacies on using Wikipedia in the classroom. Thus, the 2024 campaign was organised to instil learning on authentic and accurate information on Wikipedia.

Activities for the campaign

The activities for the campaign were edit-a-thon on Wikipedia and uploading of photos to Wikicommons. The participants created and improved contents on Wikipedia with a contest that lasted for two weeks. The highest five contributors were given prizes.

Facilitation and Methods

It was an open and free learning with an online and an in-person events at Book Foundation in Awka, Nigeria. There were 35 participants made up of professionals, undergraduate and post graduate students and Wikipedians. With projector, the participants were trained on how to create, improve and edit Wikipedia contents. They were also taught on how to upload photos to Wikicommons. Projector and the Zoom online learning space were used for the training. The facilitators were Dr. Ngozi Perpetua Osuchukwu who is the Chair, Nigerian Library Association (NLA) Anambra State Chapter and also the President of Anambra Network of Wikimedia User Group Nigeria. The co-facilitators were Dr. Adaora Obuezie who is also the Vice Chair of NLA Anambra State and Anambra Network with Bibiana Chioma Okeke from Anambra Network of WUGN. The edit-a-thon and uploads lasted for two weeks.

Outputs from the campaign

  1. The participants improved their skills on Wikipedia content creation and upload of photos
  2. The contest heightened vast creation that inspired over 2000 edits in two weeks
  3. The activity added qualitative and quantitative edits, thereby improving Wikimedia spaces
  4. The #1Lib1Ref campaign was documented and the Anambra Activity was recorded on the global map of contributors.
  5. The participants rated satisfaction and goodwill for the campaign
  6. It created visibility for EduWiki and more on using Wikipedia in the classroom
  7. It added to the activities of EduWiki

Conclusion

The global campaign of #1Lib1Ref sets a good pace for open learning and information.
