Dr G Shankar Government Women’s First Grade College & PG Study Centre, Ajjarkadu, Udupi was founded by the Government of Karnataka with an aspired vision to “empower women so as to achieve excellence and imbibe virtues of discipline, commitment to social values and willingness to contribute to the well-being of society.” In addition to its unique stamp of being the only women’s government college in the district, the institution is also first-choice educational hub of the rural and economically disadvantaged students.[1]

Motivation & Background

College has various co-curricular and extra curricular associations and wikipedia association is one of the association which has started and the inauguration of the Wikipedia Student Association at Dr G Shankar Government Women’s First Grade College & PG Study Centre, Ajjarkadu, Udupi was done on January 07, 2023 by Dr. Vishwanatha Badikana President, Karavali Wikimedians, Assistant Professor St. Aloysius College, Mangaluru, Dr. Bhaskar Shetty S. Principal of this college and also in the presence of all other guests. The special talk on Wikipedia Student Association, how to continue initiated Wikipedia Student Association and gender discrimination in wikipedia was done by Dr. U. B. Pavanaja Editor, Vishva Kannada Secretary, Karavali Wikimedians, Dr. Vishwanatha Badikana and Ms. Dhanalakshmi K. T. Founder, Wikiwomen Mangaluru. The programme was successfully completed in the presence of Sri. Ramachandra Adiga G. Head, Department of Computer Science, Sri. Sojan K. George Coordinator, college lectures and all the members of WSA.

Objectives

The main objectives of Wikipedia Students association is to:

  • Increase of Thinking Ability
  • Provide scope for student's overall progress
  • Improving the language skills and richness in writings in Indian languages
  • Improve writing Writing Skills (ability to write in an objective fashion)
  • Increase ability to critically engage with a concept/theme
