Decolonise the Internet (Nigeria/Igbo Wikipedia)

Background

The Goethe-Institut is the Federal Republic of Germany’s cultural institute, active worldwide. We promote the study of German abroad and encourage international cultural exchange.

Wikimedia User Group Nigeria (WUGN) is one of over 165 international affiliates of Wikimedia Foundation Inc, headquartered at San Francisco, United States of America. It was registered as Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation Inc. as a non-profit organization in Nigeria with the aims of promoting open license initiatives in Nigeria through the promotion of Wikipedia and its sister projects.

The Project

During its inception, the internet was seen as a vital instrument for democracy and equality. In 2020, amidst a global pandemic and racial inequalities that are very much existing, it is time to ask: Whose stories are told and who is telling these stories on the internet? And how do Artificial Intelligence, Algorithms and Bots shape our view of the world and perpetuate racisms? This is where the new Goethe-Institut project “Decolonise the Internet” sees its core.

Decolonise the Internet's Writing Competition( Editathon)

Decolonise the internet's writing competition is a national contest designed to celebrate and improve the visibility about Nigerian women by engaging the Wikimedia community and members of the community to increase women's information on Wikipedia.

The contest will focus on four Wikipedia projects namely:

English Wikipedia
Hausa Wikipedia
Igbo Wikipedia
Yorùbá Wikipedia

The contest runs through 2nd to 5th November 2020.

What prizes are offered?

The competition will award Laptop and Mobile phone devices to 1st winner and the runner up for each focused project ( En,ha,ig and yo) .

Judging( Rules) TBD

The jury will decide the criteria for the selection of winning prizes for the writing competition. This rule will cut across all the participating communities.
