Improving the Wikimedia movement’s work with content partners
Content Uploads
Description
editOne of the largest identified challenges for organizers of Wiki Loves Earth, as well as for Wiki Loves Monuments, is the lack of lists of protected heritage sites. This is a large hurdle, especially for smaller communities or new organizers, and thus a large impediment for making available and digitizing reproductions of protected heritage.
The Content Partnerships Hub initiated a conversation with Wiki Loves Earth international team on how to support communities in making lists of monuments available. Based on this, the Hub gave support to around 10 countries, mainly in Africa and Latin America, on making lists based on Wikidata to use in Wiki Loves Earth competitions.
Justification
editIn conversations with the Expert Committee, support to Wiki Loves Earth and Wiki Loves Monuments organizers has been prioritized. One reason is that it lowers barriers to entry for newcomers, and makes sure that there is a diverse support to many parts of the movement. Better data and information makes it easier for everyone to take part.
It is, however, important as part of this work to make sure that documentation is well thought through, and that not only lists and data is provided but also the infrastructure for understanding this and the capacity built to make use of it. Documentation need to cover the process of uploading data, how to replicate it, on how to use lists from Wikidata for Wiki Loves competitions, and the rest of the workflow.
Result
editDocumentation and learning
edit- WLE International Team reached out to all organizers with new lists. A third of them had implemented them. Some hadn't yet due to limited capacity and resources. Some didn't properly understand how to make use of them. More capacity needs to be built and knowledge shared on how to make use of similar lists, and the entire workflow.
