Community Wishlist Survey 2021/Multimedia and Commons/Search by image size on Commons

Search by image size on Commons

  • Problem: There are many limitations to searching images on Commons. The one feature that's present in nearly every other image search on the web but not on Commons is to be able to search by image size. It can be difficult to scan through page after page of hits looking for a high resolution image necessary for particular purposes, but we only allow searching by text or by date. Once the text is narrowed enough, people are extremely likely to use a resolution sorting/filtering mechanism.
  • Who would benefit: Anyone using images on Commons, including Wikimedians and third parties.
  • Proposed solution: Ideally there would be a way to search for a megapixel range or to set minimum horizontal or vertical resolution for an image, plus a couple presets for e.g. "small", "medium", and "large". Additionally, it would be nice to be able to sort search results by size, too.

Discussion

  • With c:Special:MediaSearch there is already a tool in development witch supports this. --GPSLeo (talk) 13:52, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • Thanks. Hadn't seen that. At this point it seems like it's only the small/medium/large, rather than allow for more specific settings (and with the search I just did, nearly all of the results were already "large" so it didn't do much). It also isn't letting me sort that "large" group by size. So I guess this request can be reframed as "modify MediaSearch to be able to..."? — Rhododendrites talk \\ 14:42, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
