Community Wishlist/Wishes/Enable subcategorizing translated pages on Commons/en
Description
This wish has already been solved – please see the solution below
In many meta categories of Wikimedia Commons, translated versions of pages are cluttering the category page, making it hard to see what the different pages (subjects) are. One can go to the translated version of the page from the header of the page.
See c:Category:Commons audio resources for an example. The translated pages should be put into a …/Translations subcategory – if you can move them, please do. When clicking on the Translate button (which replaces the Edit button), the categories can't be seen or changed. This issue was previously discussed on WMC here.
Ideally, the Translate tool would do this subcategorization on its own. If it's possible to change the categories, one could also change the categories using the cat-a-lot gadget. It could also be done like however Category:Community Wishlist/Wishes has other language versions separately. If the same issue exists on other projects, please comment which on the Talk page.
Note that sometimes there's so many translations (note there's ~300 language Wikipedias and about 10,000 notable languages) that page are pushed out of sight into separated pages. It's probably a separate issue but on the File use pages I think it would also be better if only the base pages were shown (from where one can go to the translated pages anyway) – here is an example of a long list of File uses of an image which are just one page which has many translations (the Featured pictures page in this case) and this also often pushes items out of sight and makes it difficult to oversee, make sense of and read the section.
- Solution
The solution was given via Translator's noticeboard: just editing the categories on the base-page (not any of the translated pages) to change [[Category:CatName]]
to [[Category:CatName{{#if:{{#translation:}}|/Translations}}]]
. Ideally this would be done more automatically but the solution seems sufficient and I'm sorry I only found out about this now – I had asked about it on a large page and did not receive any reply in a long time such as a wikilink to the Translator's noticeboard.
